El Disseny Hub de Barcelona ofrece la exposición temporal El mejor diseño del año hasta el 7 de enero.

El diseño y las artes influyen y están influídos por la sociedad, la cultura, la economía, la tecnología y el entorno que las rodea, de manera que van transformándose año tras año. Esta exposición anual muestra la evolución de las disciplinas creativas a través de proyectos concretos, reales, que han sido seleccionados por jurados formados por profesionales de prestigio, que han valorado la excelencia, la originalidad y la innovación conceptual de los proyectos presentados en los premios que organizan las asociaciones del FAD en las diferentes disciplinas del diseño y de las artes. En conjunto, la muestra nos ofrece una valiosa panorámica del arte, la arquitectura, el interiorismo, el diseño gráfico y la comunicación visual de ahora y aquí con más de 400 proyectos y obras.

La exposición está dividida en tres ámbitos:

Arte. Acoge las obras finalistas de la 13ª edición de los Premios FAD de Arte, unos galardones que, desde 2003, organiza la A-FAD, la Asociación de Artistas y Artesanos del FAD, y promueven la creación artística contemporánea, reconociendo el diálogo entre el concepto, el relato, los materiales y la técnica.
Arquitectura e interiorismo. Incluye las obras finalistas y seleccionadas de los 65º Premios FAD de Arquitectura e interiorismo y los Premios Habitàcola para estudiantes de arquitectura y diseño. Estos galardones son organizados por el ARQUIN-FAD, la Asociación Interdisciplinaria del Diseño del Espacio del FAD. Desde la independencia y la constancia, los Premios FAD de Arquitectura e interiorismo premian año tras año las mejores obras de la arquitectura peninsular.
Diseño gráfico y comunicación visual. Muestra las obras galardonadas de los Premios ADG Laus que organiza la Asociación de Directores de Arte y Diseñadores Gráficos del FAD (ADG-FAD), realizadas tanto por profesionales como por estudiantes. Son el barómetro anual del estado de la profesión, reconocen la excelencia y el talento emergente y promueven la importancia cultural y económica del diseño y la comunicación para la sociedad.

2023 is over and we can’t wait to start the new year 2024. The beginning of a new year is a great time to start new projects! Everyone gets back to work with more energy and enthusiasm. For this reason, we would like to share our 2023 highlights with you.

· Barcelona Architecture Walks was present in April at +Model 2023 Barcelona Architecture Festival with the route “Barcelona & Landscape in development”. In this route through different projects of public space and landscape of the city, we explain the strategies behind each of them to make Barcelona a more empathetic, sustainable and biodiverse city.

· Tours about Urban Resiliency. We are now offering tours that focus on different areas of the city that showcase strategies Barcelona is implementing for urban resiliency. Among the objectives are a greener city, and the capacity to integrate multicultural complexity into our urban fabric in a way that is respectful and sustainable.

· Barcelona has been a source of inspiration for multiple disciplines, but especially for the world of architecture and planning, this year we have done some tours for Architecture offices like SOLA – Studio Oslo Landscape Architecture, L2 Arkitekter from Nordway, SG&CO Arkitekter, MUUAN Architects from Helsinki and Skapa from Oslo.

· This 2023 we are celebrating our thirteenth anniversary. We started with a dream thirteen years ago to create an exciting adventure with Barcelona Architecture Walks, with a mix of love for our city and the desire make it known to all visitors who want to leave Barcelona with a unique souvenir; an enriching walk to really get to know our city.

We are very proud of our 2023 highlights achievements, thank you for being a part of our success! All our team members send you their best wishes for the holiday season and of course for the new year.

Behnaz Farahi IAAC Lecture Series

AI for the Built Environment Lecture Series – Behnaz Farahi

Next Thursday, 14th of December, 2023 at 19.00h Behnaz Farahi will be at IAAC Lecture Series with Emotive Environments, Surveillance and AI in the contest of AI for the Built Environment Lecture Series.

Trained as an architect, Behnaz Farahi is an award winning designer and critical maker based in Los Angeles. She holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Media Arts and Practice from USC School of Cinematic Arts. Currently she is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Design, California State University, Long Beach. She explores how to foster an empathetic relationship between the human body and the space around it using computational systems. Her work addresses critical issues such as feminism, emotion, perception and social interaction. Farahi has won several awards including the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum Digital Design Award, Innovation By Design Fast Company Award, World Technology Award. She is a co-editor of an issue of AD, ‘3D Printed Body Architecture’ (2017) and ‘Interactive Design’ (forthcoming) and ‘Emotive Design’ (forthcoming).

Emotive Environments, Surveillance and AI

The lecture addresses new ways in which materials of the environment can be imbued with Artificial Intelligence and life-like behavior in order to interface with human emotion. The goal is to address the possibility of an empathetic relationship between human beings and their environment in order to augment human intelligence and sensory experience of the world and influence social interactions. By demonstrating a series of interdisciplinary projects developed by the author, the attempt is to address provocative research questions through design and critical making, fueled by the latest advances in the world of neuroscience, cognitive philosophy, computational design, artificial intelligence and feminism. From wearables to architecture, these projects demonstrate an application of techniques, such as EEG brain imaging, facial and gaze tracking as well as novel actuator systems, such as smart materials and pneumatics systems.

Responsive cities 2023: Barcelona – 27th and 28th of November 2023

The 2023 edition of Responsive cities 2023 focuses on “Collective Intelligence Design” and takes place within the framework of the Green Skills for Cities project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union and developed by the Advanced Architecture Group of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia -IAAC- (Spain), Vienna University of Economics and Business -WU- (Austria), University of Genoa -UNIGE- (Italy), and European Association for Local Democracy -ALDA- (France).

Responsive Cities 2023 Symposium seeks to delve into the emerging paradigm of collective intelligence in the processes of city making. As cities continue to evolve in complexity and interconnectedness in the context of the climate emergency, embracing new forms of intelligence that go beyond human perspectives becomes the cornerstone for the future of urbanity.

Collective Intelligence Design promotes an emerging collective intelligence paradigm that empowers the applications of co-creation, following generative processes of both the living and the machine.
This post anthropocentric approach highlights a unique combination of crowd wisdom and artificial intelligence that, together with other forms of intelligences including animal, vegetable, or microbial, marks a significant milestone in the creation of our future green cities.

By embracing new forms of intelligence in design, architecture and cities can transcend anthropocentric perspectives and cultivate a new ecological, technological but also cultural paradigm of inhabitation where inclusivity lies in its core. This shift recognizes that cities are alive and dynamic ecosystems interconnected with the natural world, while acknowledging the interdependencies among humans, non human, cultural and technological others.

IAAC Lecture Series – Felipe Correa

Felipe Correa is a founder and managing Partner of Somatic Collaborative. Through Somatic Collaborative, Correa has directed a wide range of applied research and design projects in the Americas, Asia and Europe. Correa’s work focuses on the design and transformation of cities and urban areas. From the conceptualization of urban regeneration projects to the planning of new city extensions, Correa’s work sits at the intersection of design, policy, and economic development. He is currently the Vincent and Eleanor Shea Professor at the University of Virginia (UVA), where he served as chair of the Department of Architecture from 2018-2022.

Rivers as Outlines for Resilient Urbanization: The cases of São Paulo and Manaus

Through work developed by Correa’s design practice, Somatic Collaborative, in São Paulo and Manaus, he will describe the intricate relationship between urbanization and rivers; showing how watersheds have shaped cities and in turn how cities have enclosed rivers. Furthermore, the lecture will argue for the reintegration of derelict rivers into the city’s urban imaginary, as twenty-first century infrastructures that mitigate environmental uncertainty and as renewed spaces for new forms of civic life.

Barcelona & Urban resilience

Today Barcelona Architecture Walks would like to share some updates with you. We are now offering tours that focus on different areas of the city that showcase strategies Barcelona is implementing for urban resilience. Among the objectives are a greener city, and the capacity to integrate multicultural complexity into our urban fabric in a way that is respectful and sustainable.

These routes will take the walker through different projects that has implemented the urban resilience, public spaces, green zones, and “superblocks”. We will discuss what the difficulties and challenges of each project are in reaching a common goal of increasing space for public interactions and to reinforce the social fabric of each neighborhood.

The BARCELONA & THE FUTURE tour takes the walker through the POBLE NOU district, where the first superblock was introduced several years ago. We visit the area surrounding the Glories Plaza that has both projects that are complete like the Gran Clariana, and the park, still under construction, that will become a new central meeting point for Barcelona.

The BARCELONA & URBANISM tour takes you to the area surrounding the SANT ANTONI MARKET, where we can see the second superblock in Barcelona and how it was integrated into the market renovation in one of the densest neighborhoods in the city.

Our BARCELONA & LANDSCAPE special tour takes the walker through different green spaces in the city with a focus on PASEO SAN JOAN. A beautiful project that converted one of the most important avenues of the city using landscape design. A street that had been neglected over the years has been transformed into a neighborhood community space that integrates cars, pedestrians, public space, leisure areas, and areas for play.

Firas Safieddine at IAAC Lecture Series

Firas Safieddine will be at IAAC Lecture Series AI for the Built Environment on Tuesday 14th of November. This lecture is part of the events organized in the framework of the 10th Advanced Architecture Contest that invites architects, designers, and innovators to explore the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the built environment.

Firas Safieddine is a leading practitioner whose work spans architecture, urbanism, design, Ecology, and neurotechnology. He coined “Electrical Ecologies”, and aims at designing the first ‘architecture brain implant’. With the mission to redefine the spatial design discourse, Firas is the founder and executive strategist at Spatial Forces, a next-gen spatial design practice operating across scales and media, from the microcontroller to the territory. His professional involvement goes beyond design, to strategy, writing, community building, and academia. He is the Chief Architect at Gamium, Founder and Creative Strategist at Urbanitarian, author at UrbanNext, and Chapter lead at NeurotechBCN, the Barcelona chapter of NeurotechX.

He holds a bachelor’s in Architecture from the University of Balamand through the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts and a post-professional master’s degree from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya through the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, and certifications from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT on Smart Mobility and Emerging Design and Technologies beyond Smart Cities.

The What, Why, and How Behind the Buzzword of the Year – AI

Much like past technological advancements that reshaped architecture, AI stands as a contender to be a vital element in the future of design. AI models are now integral throughout the design process, from data collection and simulation to conceptualization, modeling, and visualization.

Understanding intelligence as an emergent property of material assemblages unlocks new highways of exploration within the context of spatial design and creative production at broad. On the one hand, understanding the fundamentals and defining AI within the design context, and on the other, experimenting with design workflows and AI models to create works relevant within the architecture and spatial design context.

The talk will set the groundwork for a comprehensive understanding of what is AI, examine architectural and design questions that can be the catalysts behind AI experimentation, and finally, run through workflows and projects that adopt AI as as an integral component of the creative process.

Iñaqui Carnicero at IAAC Lecture Series

Iñaqui Carnicero is the Secretary General of the Urban Agenda, Housing and Architecture in Spain.

The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) is delighted to present him on Friday 27th October in the framework of the Opening Events of the Academic Year 2023-24.

Carnicero holds a Ph.D. in Architecture from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) in 2015, with a unanimous “Cum Laude” distinction, and received his professional degree from the Technical School of Architecture of Madrid (ETSAM) in 1998. His research work was awarded a scholarship by the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome in 2008.

In addition to his professional work as an architect, he has been active in the fields of teaching, research, and curatorial work, addressing issues related to housing, urbanism, and the revitalization of existing architectural fabric.

He has served as a visiting professor at various international universities, including Cornell University, Columbia University, Yale University, and MIT. His work has been internationally recognized with awards such as the Golden Lion at the 2016 Venice Biennale, the AIA New York Housing Design Award in 2015, the Hauser Award in 2012, the Design Vanguard Award in 2011, the FAD Architecture Award in 2012, and the COAM Award in 2012.

From June 2020 until his appointment as Secretary General of the Urban Agenda, Housing and Architecture in February 2023, he held the position of General Director of Urban Agenda and Architecture.

2023 FAD awards winners

The García Márquez library and the Reggio School win the FAD awards

The Gabriel García Márquez library in Barcelona, won the 2023 FAD Architecture Prize last Thursday. This work, signed by Guillermo Sevillano and Elena Orte , members of the Madrid studio SUMA, shared the award ex aequo with the Reggio School in Madrid, built in Encinar de los Reyes by Andrés Jaque, from Madrid, at the head of its Office for Political Innovation. A library and a school, which the jury considered “excellent works, of a complementary nature, representatives of a broad-spectrum contemporary architecture.”

This argument suggests both coincidences and divergences in the criteria of the winners. That’s how it is. The two works express their concern for environmental problems. But they do it in a different way. The García Márquez Library, in the Sant Martí district, is built using a structure of wooden panels, hybridized with steel, and achieves loose spaces flooded with overhead and lateral light, ideal for reading, while its volume adapts , without losing character, to the chamfer on which it stands.

The Reggio School, for its part, also expresses environmental concern, for example, in the cork insulation on the façade or in its interior garden on the fourth floor, under a greenhouse roof. It also includes powerful proposals, such as those of the large agora on the rear façade, or the adjoining loggia, and others of a different nature, such as the main façade, with a capricious formal resolution.

The FAD Interior Design Award went to Barcelona-based Jorge Vidal Estudio and Marcos Catalán Estudio, for their renovation of the Garciaz farmhouse in Cáceres, carried out with sensitivity and appreciation for local materials and techniques.

The FAD for City and Landscape was awarded to the conditioning of the port shore in Porto do Con (Coruña), signed by architects Juan Creus and Covadonga Carrasco, together with Marcial Rodríguez, Alberto Redondo and José Valladares. The FAD for Ephemeral Interventions went to the Twist project, in Madrid, of circus and rock inspiration, created by Javier Jiménez (Studio Animal). FAD International Susan’s House, a work in the USA by Xavier Vendrell and Mary English, and The Dark Line, in Taiwan, by Miquel Batlle and Michèle Orliac. FAD Thought and Criticism went to Architecture of Bacalhau and other species by André Tavares and Diego Inglez de Souza, and ugly Spainby Andrés Rubio.

Chris Precht is the co-founder of Studio Precht. He is husband to Fei, father to Tio and Emma and an architect in the mountains of Austria.

The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) is delighted to present his lecture in the framework of the Opening Events of the Academic Year 2023-24.

Architecture events often present idealistic standards of perfection, concealing the challenges architects face beneath the surface. Precht, with six years of experience in Studio Precht, has learned that the initial enthusiasm of architecture often gives way to a heavy responsibility. Creatives protect their work in a competitive industry, showing confidence and success while keeping as private their failures and conflicts. In this lecture, Chris Precht aims to share the shift in perspective that parenthood has revealed to him, underlining the value of sharing struggles and vulnerability alongside successes as a way to grow. Barcelona Design Week 2023

The Barcelona Design Week (BDW) takes place from 16th to 28th October, with an extensive programme that includes installations, exhibitions, showrooms, talks, workshops and open days, created by Barcelona Design Centre in 2006, this is the annual event on design and creativity in Barcelona.

BDW 2023 is a very special edition, number 18, our coming of age. In addition, this edition is expressly associated with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals declared by the United Nations.

Faced with a global scenario increasingly marked by uncertainty, complexity and volatility, design is a key element for people’s present and future, to create a human future. In this sense, this year we have set ourselves a clear goal, to launch a global initiative to promote SDG goal number 18 and it becomes our motto: Design for Human Future.

Halfway to achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda, launched in 2015, now is the time to take a realistic view of what has been achieved so far and what is still pending. And, for this reason, at BDW we believe that it is time to give design the importance it has and deserves by launching this transversal initiative.

BDW is the first design week proposing a SDG on design and is a member of the World Design Weeks network, whose headquarters are in Barcelona. The network consists of nearly 40 design festivals around the world on design and creativity fields.

BDW is organised by Barcelona centre de Disseny and promoted by Barcelona City Council, in collaboration with FAD Fostering Arts and Design and Disseny Hub Barcelona (DHub).
