Great reviews

Today, we share some great reviews that we have receive in TripAdvisor all with the highest score! For us is a privilege to know that our customers are so satisfied and enjoy with our work.

Thank you for a super city tour

Our 4 person group toured the city streets with a landscape architect Daniela for four hours. She told and showed us how the city has developed from 1859 to today. It was a fascinating way to get to know the city and it’s history. The one thing that we always will remember from the tour is the courage of the Barcelona city, architects and landscape architects to implement even the more unusual plans. In addition, this four-hour session increased the understanding of how much urban planners and landscape architects need to know and to take into account when making plans.

Learned so much; Pia was wonderful

Our guide Pia was funny, passionate and clearly knew her stuff. My engineering grandson and son-in-law would have loved it but as non-architects we did too. Perfect combination of the technical and non-technical, engineering, architecture and history. Best architecture tour I have ever had and headphones were a plus. No matter where you stood you could hear Pia’s commentary . Couldn’t recommend more highly.

10/10 recommend this tour

This tour set a VERY high bar for walking tours. Tomás started our tour with historical maps and images on the history of Barcelona, Cerdas and Gaudi which gave context to the rest of the tour. We experienced Gaudí through the eyes of an architect while walking the streets of Barcelona. It was like a dream come true. 10/10 recommend.

Written May 2024

With more enthusiasm than ever we are ready to continue spreading the architecture, history and culture of our wonderful city.
Thank you all for your excellent reviews!!!

Barcelona will be holding its Architecture Weeks 2024 from 14 May to 28 June, offering seven weeks of wide-ranging events designed to strengthen the link between architecture and the general public. In its architecture, Barcelona has an urban heritage of indisputable value, and the Weeks will help to reinforce the feeling among city residents that this heritage is theirs. At the same time, we want it to be a celebration and a meeting space for all audiences where together we will learn about, experience and celebrate our city’s architecture and heritage.

Organised by Barcelona City Council and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, the Architecture Weeks have five strategic partners, namely, the Architects’ Association of Catalonia, the FAD/Arquinfad, 48H Open House Barcelona, Construmat and the Technical Architects’ Association of Barcelona, as well as some 15 academic partners: all the Catalan schools of architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture and spatial design.

Since the first edition in 2017, Barcelona’s Architecture Weeks have been open to all organisations devoted to the promotion of architecture in the city, as well as a representation of different cultural, social and artistic disciplines. This year, 74 entities and 12 universities have responded to the open call, and together we will offer more than 183 activities aimed at audiences of all kinds, to reflect on and share how the built city has adapted to today’s challenges – the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals – with a view to Barcelona becoming the World Capital of Architecture in 2026.

Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said: “Architecture is a fundamental part not just of our European culture, but also of sustainable development and people’s well-being. The winners of the 2024 EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award demonstrate this very clearly. Their works reflect the principles of the New European Bauhaus, bringing the green transition into people’s everyday lives and living spaces. My heartfelt congratulations to the architects and collaborators behind these endeavours!”

The Study Pavilion in Braunschweig is rewarded for its ability to challenge the constraints and imagery of sustainability, creating a welcoming and playful environment for study, collaboration and community gathering through an uncompromising and carefully detailed structure. It has taken a clear architectural idea, scrutinized it and pushed it to the limit; more than being a building, it could be understood as a versatile system, merging technological inventions with a flexible and reusable principle. The authors, Gustav Düsing and Max Hacke, founded their studios in 2015 and won the competition to build the study centre in 2015. They are the youngest winners of the EUmies Awards Architecture Prize.

The Library in Barcelona acts at the scale of the city, contributing to the transformation of the neighbourhoodby opening up as a new exterior and interior public space. This wooden structure unfolds as a rich sequence of monumental and domestic spaces that welcome neighbours and citizens, providing them with comfortable atmospheres for learning, teamwork, and community engagement. With meticulous attention to detail, the authors have thoroughly examined and pushed the library programme to its fullest potential. The authors, Elena Orte and Guillermo Sevillano founded their studio SUMA Arquitectura in 2005 and won the competition to build the library in 2015.

Don’t Build, Rebuild: The Case for Imaginative Reuse in Architecture

As climate change has escalated into a crisis, the reuse of existing structures is the only way to even begin to preserve our wood, sand, silicon, and iron, let alone stop belching carbon monoxide into the air. Our housing crisis means that we need usable buildings now more than ever, but architect and critic Aaron Betsky shows that new construction—often seeking to maximize profits rather than resources, often soulless in its feel—is not the answer. Whenever possible, it is better to repair, recycle, renovate, and reuse—not only from an environmental perspective, but culturally and artistically as well.

Architectural reuse is as old as civilization itself. In the streets of Europe, you can find fragments from the Roman Empire. More recently, marginalized communities from New York to Detroit—queer people looking for places to gather or cruise, punks looking to make loud music, artists and displaced people looking for space to work and live—have taken over industrial spaces created then abandoned by capitalism, forging a unique style in the process. Their methods—from urban mining to dumpster diving—now inform architects transforming old structures today.

Barcelona & Gothic to Modern

Barcelona & Gothic to Modern, see Barcelona through the eyes of Enric Miralles

Join us as we explore the ideas and mindset of Enric Miralles, a genius in our lifetime. With Benedetta Tagliabue, he designed one of the most brilliant works of architecture in this city: the refurbishing of Santa Caterina Market.

blank

With the aim of truly enjoying Enric Miralles’s work, we propose a journey of initiation that will attempt to be loyal to the architect’s words: “The architecture that interests me is capable of avoiding demagoguery and cannot hide the complex reality it comes from.”

This architecture tour walks through history, politics, the cultural imagination and the architecture of Barcelona’s Gothic and La Ribera Quarters.

blank

We begin the journey in Roman Barcelona, then travel to the Carolingian era, the post-Franco era, Olympic Barcelona and, finally, the era that created el forat de la vergonya (the hole of shame). The walk ends in the market, where we will do some fieldwork to check Miralles’ methods, along with some of the processes that formed part of his modus operandi.

BAW at TravelMag magazine

Today we want to share some special news with you, the blog TravelMag has published an article that puts BARCELONA ARCHITECTURE WALKS among the Best Guided Gaudi Tours in Barcelona. TravelMag is a dedicated travel and resource blog with the aim of helping travelers and readers on their journey around the world; which makes us extremely happy to be included in their ranking of tours of Barcelona.

Under the title “The Best Gaudi Tours in Barcelona” they explain that when you’re in Barcelona, it’s never long before you stumble upon a piece of unmistakable architecture created by the great Antoni Gaudi.

Here is what they say:

Most prolific during the late 19th and early 20th century, the famous practitioner of Catalan modernist architecture had a uniquely recognisable style – a style that can be seen in buildings and landmarks dotted across the city. Such is his legacy that a number of tour companies in Barcelona offer guided excursions dedicated exclusively to discovering Gaudi’s vast body of work. We’ve picked out five of the best below.

blank

Discover Gaudi Architectural Guided Tour

While some Gaudi tours skirt around the edges of the technical mastery behind his work, this immersive 3-hour walking tour really gets under the skin of the subject to provide deep insights into his creative genius – as well as Barcelona’s broader architectural landscape. Hosted by only practicing architects, most of whom are also architectural professors and critics, tours start in the morning and take in some of the city’s most prominent examples of the Modernisme period, including the three main residential buildings designed by Gaudi: Casa Calvet, Casa Batlló, and Casa Milà. At the tour’s conclusion, guests receive a bespoke guide full of tips on the city’s architectural gems as well as the best spots for a well-earned, post-sightseeing drink. From €45 per person.

From left to right Carme Popescu, Daniela Sanchez, Pia Wortham, Elodie Grammont, Jele Prokopljevic, Cristina Santamaria and Mavi Hita our BAW’s Women team 2024.

Carmen Popescu, born in Bucharest. Architecture Studies between Bucharest and Barcelona 1992-2003.

As a BAW walk leader, I try to transmit my experience of Barcelona, both as a practicing architect and as a passionate resident. Our walks allow us to explore the city, exchange ideas and share impressions about its timeless unique features. The routes are attractive and surprising, and I try to make everybody have a good time, while discovering some of Barcelona’s treasures.

Daniela Sánchez Sáez, born in Santiago de Chile. Architecture studies by Universidad de Chile and Master in Landscape by Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB-UPC).

Barcelona is a city recognized worldwide for its urban planning, public space and landscape projects. I am interested in explaining how the city has raised various strategies over the years, emphasizing the different perspectives on it and its urban transformations, starting from the landscape vision. And showing how the projects are design and built to develop a more sustainable city.

Pia Wortham, born in Mexico City, Mexico. She studied at Tufts University Civil Engineering and Fine arts Museum School of Boston Massachusetts.

History is multidisciplinary,  and if we choose to look at history this way the whole accumulation of our human experience is more interesting. My classes have a healthy combination of technology and historical fact that I combine in order to relate the past to our present architectural practice and technology. This dual focus allows me to adapt the content of my tours based on the background and interests of the group. Architecture is a strange hybrid of many disciplines that literally makes up our built environment, I  try to convey the intricacies and complexities of cities in general and Barcelona in particular to enhance a sense of curiosity in the world around us.

Elodie Gammont, born in Dax, France. Arquitect by Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB-UPC).

She is the half part of our adventure Barcelona Architecture Walks. BAW and MIEL Arquitectos Co-founder beside Miguel Angel Borràs. She develop some differents aspects like documentation and images task and take care of accounts, and of course she walks with all our tours as well. Specially when we need speak French!

Jelena Prokopljevic born in Belgrade. Architect degree from the Belgrade University 1998.

Architecture is always the expression of an epoch: of its society, politics and ideologies, culture, economy and technological development. When a client formulates a project commission, the package contains a set of dreams, a desired image that is to be projected through the built work defining its artistic attractiveness, high technology, ecological awareness, material austerity or exuberance. I like to transmit all this complexit

Cristina Santamaria Nogueira she is from Barcelona. Architect by Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB-UPC).

It is a pleasure to guide along my home city! A perfect combination of being outside, enjoying such beautiful surroundings while getting to know interesting people, showing them around, opening our minds to each other and letting each walk flow by itself. The great team of guides built at BAW makes our work collaborative an very rewarding!

y of architecture and its general context both to my students and to my fellow-walkers.

Mavi Hita born in Granada, Spain. Arquitect by Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB-UPC).

She is our Community Manager from May 2016. She have been working at different architecture studios like ADD Bailo-Rull or Carme Pinós studio in Barcelona. She is always looking for news, pictures and content to interest our walkers.

IAAC Lecture Series – Anupama Kundoo

Anupama Kundoo graduated from University of Mumbai in 1989 and received her PhD degree from TU Berlin in 2008. Her research-oriented practice started in 1990 in Auroville has generated people centric architecture based on spatial and material research for low environmental impact while being socio-economically beneficial. Her body of works was recently exhibited as a solo show ‘Taking Time’ at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark.

blank

She has taught Architecture and Urban Management at various international universities strengthening her expertise in rapid urbanization and climate change related development issues including at Yale University and Columbia University. She is currently Professor at Potsdam School of Architecture, Germany and the Head of Urban Design, Auroville in India. She received the RIBA Charles Jencks award for her contribution to architectural theory, the 2021 Auguste Perret Prize for architectural technology, the 2021 Building Sense Now global award of the German Sustainable Building Council DGNB, and the Global Award for Sustainable architecture under UNESCO patronage in 2022. Her studios are based in Berlin in Germany, and Pondicherry in India. Kundoo’s rigorous research and experimentation in new materiality for architecture is the result of questioning basic assumptions, construction habits that humanity has adopted during the long process of industrialization. Rather than focussing on shortage, she sought abundance through investing in human resources and human resourcefulness, such as ingenuity, time, skills, care and sense of community.

Rethinking Material Resources Alongside Human Resourcefulness

Our built environment is the physical stage on which all human stories are lived out. This physical stage is the historical and ongoing manifestation of human imagination operating within real (or, imaginary!) constraints. Anupama Kundoo advances the idea that architectural imagination must transcend design and enter the realms of materials science and economics where some of the bigger questions reside. She will discuss the thrust of her inquiries which have been to find practical ways to fulfill the universal human aspiration for refuge, purpose, and social engagement through extensive material research and experimentation. She will discuss ‘Human Time as a Resource’ in the quest for new materiality and critically examine the way the time value of money has nudged us towards code-based design and the industrialized production of building components and, sometimes, even entire buildings themselves. She will discuss materiality and consumption of finite natural resources alongside their impact on human wellbeing and human resourcefulness.

Selected by the jury comprising 7 members: Frédéric Druot, Martin Braathen, Pippo Ciorra, Tinatin Gurgenidze, Adriana Krnáčová, Sala Makumbundu, and Hrvoje Njiric, from a list of 362 nominees, the “7 finalist works promote local policy references and can become global European models since all of them create inclusive and high-quality living environments.”

The official statement adds that “most of them transformed and improved the conditions of rather small communities in places that had undergone different processes of neglect: former industrial areas and rural towns. The works in larger cities are implemented in peripheral areas, building strong associations with the neighborhoods.”

The EUmies Awards Day, which includes the award ceremony, will take place on May 14, 2024, at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona and the Palau Victòria Eugènia, in the context of the Barcelona Architecture Weeks. Find out more here and read on to discover the finalists’ projects.

Mark Burry is a practising architect who has published internationally on two main themes: putting theory into practice with regard to procuring ‘challenging’ architecture, and the life, work and theories of the architect Antoni Gaudí. He has been Senior Architect to the Sagrada Família Basilica Foundation since 1979, pioneering distant collaboration with his colleagues based on-site in Barcelona concluding in late 2016.

Recent publications include an edited 4-volume 1,600-page collection of papers setting out the grounds for Digital Architecture as a critical concept, including a 9,000-word introduction to the set with accompanying introductions to each volume (Routledge – Taylor & Francis, March 2020), and an edition of AD titled ‘Urban Futures – Designing the Digitalised City’ (Wiley, May-June, 2020)

After Gaudí: how might AI have helped us learn from Gaudí’s surviving model fragments for his Sagrada Família Basilica design?

Mark Burry’s talk will outline his experience in helping unpack the mysteries of Gaudí’s final design models for the Sagrada Famíilia Basilica. He will describe Gaudí’s struggles realising his projects more as sculptural undertakings than architecture, and how he shifted dimensions to bring an invisible rationality to his modus operandi. Burry will first examine Gaudí’s analogue design process, and then critically examine the role of design computation for a deep dive into Gaudí’s creative world in both the digital and post digital eras. This will lead to some general observations on the power of creativity, and both some limits as well as opportunities for AI to influence future architectural design seen through the lens of Gaudí’s extraordinary endeavour.
