Thank you for a super city tour

Our 4 person group toured the city streets with a landscape architect Daniela for four hours. She told and showed us how the city has developed from 1859 to today. It was a fascinating way to get to know the city and it’s history. The one thing that we always will remember from the tour is the courage of the Barcelona city, architects and landscape architects to implement even the more unusual plans. In addition, this four-hour session increased the understanding of how much urban planners and landscape architects need to know and to take into account when making plans.

Learned so much; Pia was wonderful

Our guide Pia was funny, passionate and clearly knew her stuff. My engineering grandson and son-in-law would have loved it but as non-architects we did too. Perfect combination of the technical and non-technical, engineering, architecture and history. Best architecture tour I have ever had and headphones were a plus. No matter where you stood you could hear Pia’s commentary . Couldn’t recommend more highly.

This tour set a VERY high bar for walking tours. Tomás started our tour with historical maps and images on the history of Barcelona, Cerdas and Gaudi which gave context to the rest of the tour. We experienced Gaudí through the eyes of an architect while walking the streets of Barcelona. It was like a dream come true. 10/10 recommend.

Best Part of our Trip!
Review of: Barcelona and The Future. Regular Tour by Candida R.
My partner and I did the Barcelona and the Future tour with Pia and it was outstanding, the highlight of our trip to this fantastic city. Pia is incredibly knowledgeable and interesting, and our three hour tour felt like an entire course in Barcelona’s history from the Romans to now, including its geography, politics, culture, and social history. Pia showed us maps of the different stages of Barcelona’s built history to give us a sense of how the city developed and why, and she could answer any and every question we had so we came away with a much deeper understanding of the city in general. We learned about the design and structure of recent buildings by star architects as well as other buildings around them, and we heard about the larger urban plan for the future of Barcelona, including the famous Superblocks. We wish we had more time to do the other tours because this was a fabulous opportunity to have a deep and thoughtful conversation with an expert about the city.

Review of: Barcelona & Gothic to Modern. Regular Tour by Sawan M.
We had a wonderful time with Pia. It felt as if it was conversation about history , construction details and an architecture walk rolled into one.

Pia is a Barcelona native by way of Texas and Mexico City. She has extensive knowledge of the gothic quarter having lived there for a while. She has also worked in some of architecture firms who are responsible for building some of the lovely spaces we saw. This gives a unique perspective which is very interesting. My wife and I asked her a lot of questions during the tour which she answered patiently.

Pia gave us a detailed history of how Barcelona evolved starting from Roman times. On the the 3 hour walking tour we visited various buildings and streets where she explained everything from construction methods to the historical and political reasons why certain structures were built and extended over time.

We certainly feel we know a lot more about Barcelona than we ever did before. It was certainly enjoyable to get the tour from an expert who understands what is beneath the surface and can explain it to us in simple terms.

Wonderful mother-daughter trip highlight!
We had an incredible trip, made even better by this tour. I’m an architect specializing in historic preservation, and this tour was phenomenal and right up my ally. Our guide was able to focus on areas that she knew would be relevant to her clients after getting to know us better throughout the day. Even if you aren’t an architecture-nerd like me, you’ll enjoy this a ton! My mother had a great time, even though she’s not an architect! Thanks for a great tour, teaching us about the history of Barcelona architecture, giving us some exercise after eating our way through the city, and providing exceptional service for a reasonable price!

Fantastic Barcelona and Gaudi tour with Pia – who was incredibly knowledgable across a vast range of topics!

As a former museum and art gallery director – I have done a great number of tours – and architecture is a great personal interest area. This was no ordinary architecture tour – as Pia’s background in architecture and engineering was complimented by her diverse knowledge and interest in science, culture and history to create one of the most engaging and dynamic tours I have taken in any city around the world.

Being a complete “newbie” to Barcelona – the foundation of ideas and insights that Pia established in these three hours – allowed me to really see and understand the city in the days that followed. I have left Barcelona having now decided it is my most favourite European city – in a great part, because of this wonderful architectural tour with Pia!

Highly recommended. I’m planning on returning to Barcelona soon and definitely making time for several of the other tours offered.

Top Notch Tour!

Discover Barcelona as you have never done before and take this very special architectural walking tour. Miguel, a passionate architect, will guide you through different neighborhoods, teaching you about Barcelona’s history and culture, through it’s architecture – linking the old and the new – in a fascinating new way. This is a great way to get beneath the surface of a city and look at Barcelona’s urban landscape and the forces that have shaped it. This is one of the most interesting and informative tours I’ve ever taken. Don’t miss it; it is brilliant!

Two tours with Martina

Martina hosted two tours that we attended.:The Gaudi tour and the “Barcelona and the Future” tour. it was very informative and we enjoyed both of them very much. Martina is a very knowledgeable guide who has a deep knowledge for Architecture and is passionate with her subject.
The difference we found with a walking tour guided by an Architect, is that you hear a different perspective on the reasons why such buildings and urban environments are the way they are. This is a refreshing approach compared to a more “touristic” guided walk.
As a result, we felt that we learnt something valuable on the day and would recommend this to our friends.

Barcelona & the Sea

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone going to Barcelona and interested in it’s history. Our tour guide, Ricard, explained the political, cultural and environmental forces which shaped Barcelona from its beginnings to present day. As we walked through the neighborhoods our eyes awaken to many buildings we otherwise would have missed nor understood their importance. This tour enriched our experience of Barcelona. Our guide was very knowledgeable, interesting and personable. He is a local resident and having grown up in the city brought interesting stories and insights to the tour. Wish we had time to go on other tours by offered BAW.  Marian C

Three tours! Five stars!

I very much enjoyed my three tours:
Ricard (Sea)
Martina (Urbanism)
Carola (Future City)
Hopefully someday I will return and to the other two.
It worked out great to do the tours in this order as well. The Sea gives you the origins for the city. Urbanism helps explain the city growth and planning beyond the original walls. And the future city gives a look at what might or might come in the future.
All three of my guides were excellent. I enjoyed getting to know them and their beautiful city. Can’t wait to come back!!  (JoelMinneapolis)

Excellent Introduction to “Barcelona and the Market”

We did “Barcelona and the Market” with Miguel last Monday. He was a brilliant guide and interpreter of how Barcelona has developed in response to changing needs and new technologies. He brings the architecture alive and explains how Barcelona’s architectural tradition has developed. Of particular interest to us was how Barcelona’s people have shaped the planning of the city and how architects have responded to and shaped this. Miguel is an engaging and informative guide who brough the market alive and shared with us and helped us to appreciated the thought that Miralles hadn’t put into it.  (Peter M.)blank

“Opened our eyes to Barcelona”

My friends and I went on the “Barcelona and the Future” tour with Carola, and it was excellent! Very informative and interesting with a nice balance of historical context and contemporary issues. It’s easy to go to Barcelona just to party and eat delicious food, but it has a rich history and world-class urban planning that we were happy to learn more about. I would definitely sign up for additional tours with them!

“Excellent way to discover the city”

We booked two walks to visit Barcelona with our 10 year old son: Barcelona and Gaudi and Barcelona and the sea.
We all enjoyed the tours very much, it was a fun and interesting way to discover the city, its history and the secrets of its architecture.

The Barcelona and Gaudi tour allowed us to understand what Gaudi had in mind, how he evolved and how he designed his buildings. The tour doesn’t take you inside the buildings so once you have done this tour, be sure to visit the inside of the buildings and you will really understand what they are all about.

Barcelona and the Sea is more about the history of the city and its people. We learned a lot and it was a really nice walk.

The company also gave us advice for restaurants, they are really friendly and helpful.

We enjoyed the in depth history of Barcelona’s architecture and city plan. Our guide showed us hidden courtyards and gave us a good perspective on Gaudi’s role in the city development. We would highly recommend this as a must-do in Barcelona!

“Great way to get your bearings ”

Because we were a group of 6 we did a private Gaudi tour. Ricard was great, his English was excellent and he took us to all the Gaudi spots and some extras. He gave great context of Barcelona and Catalunya history and architectural history around the city. It was a really great way to determine what we wanted to see and the history of the town. I highly suggest it as your first activity and if we were here longer we would go on another tour!

“Brought the history of Barcelona to life through the enthusiasm of our knowledgeable guide”

We learnt so much whilst exploring the streets of Exaimple. We would definitely recommend this, ideally as the first thing you do on arriving in Barcelona. Joan was so enthusiastic that the time flew by and we were sad to find the tour had finished. Thank you so much, Joan!

“Perfect way to start our time in Barcelona”

We had a great time on our Gaudi walk with Ricard and learned a lot about Barcelona’s history, and of course Gaudi. I highly recommend this walk if you are planning to visit Gaudi’s main sites. It gave us a great foundation of knowledge. I think the pricing is a great value for what you get. If I visit Barcelona again, I would like to do one of the other walks!

“Understanding Barcelona through architecture”

I went only a Barcelona Architecture Walks tour with Joan recently. It was a brilliant way to understand Barcelona’s history and development. It helped me to appreciate the invaluable contribution Gaudi and some of the other modernisme architects made to Barcelona. I would heartily recommend the tour, even if you’re not deeply interested in architecture.

 “A great way to understand Barcelona’s incredible buildings”

We loved our Gaudi walk with Jordi, who was very friendly, knowledgable and interesting to listen to. We learnt so much about how the city of Barcelona was formed and developed, with fascinating insights and context for appreciating Gaudi’s work. You don’t need to know anything about architecture to enjoy this walk, there’s something in it for everyone.

It was great having an architect as a guide. Jordi was able to answer our questions and he clearly loves unravelling the mysteries of the buildings of barcelona. Next time we visit, I’d love to do the future walk.

Sometimes a review at Tripadvisor about what we love to do, spread the architecture that inspires us, can make you cry!!!! Here you have an example:

“Perhaps the best tour I’ve ever done”

Let me begin in saying that I do not like tours. My travel preference is to conduct my own research and explore, I’m not a fan of packaged commercial experiences. THAT SAID, Barcelona Architecture Walks is one of the most fantastic city exploration experiences I’ve ever participated in. We had very limited time in Barcelona and knew we wanted to be efficient; we also wanted to understand history and context for the city’s many landmarks. I googled Barcelona architecture and, thankfully, BAW happened to come up. We booked the private Gaudi walk for 4 guests. Joan was our guide and he was FABULOUS. Knowledgeable and passionate about his subject matter, and a true contributor to the Barcelona architecture scene and community. We had multiple educators in our group who peppered him with lots of questions and curiosities and he had enlightening perspective on all counts. His English is also fantastic (we had non-Spanish speakers in our group). I had some questions of BAW in general regarding our tour prior to taking it, and all advance communication was clear and professional as well. Long story short, this organization has a great purpose and is very well run. Our BAW was a highlight of the trip, it felt very authentic and like having a local professor take you around the city. Would highly recommend this experience to any visitor to Barcelona. No working architecture knowledge needed, just the curiosity to learn more about the history of Barcelona and the famous minds (Gaudi) that influenced it. Thank you, Joan, for such a wonderful tour!
