Seny i rauxa new exhibition at Disseny Hub Barcelona

Seny i rauxa. An account of Catalan Architecture

From May 22th the Disseny Hub Barcelona will hold a new exhibition Seny i rauxa that proposes a broad and evocative journey through Catalan architecture, highlighting its richness, diversity, and historical continuity. The starting point is the recognition of an unbroken thread that links the founding of the School of Architecture in 1875 with contemporary practices and sensibilities. A thread that runs through generations, styles, and turbulent periods, yet remains alive through a way of working in which restraint and audacity, rigor and instinct coexist, in a balance popularly known as seny and rauxa.

The exhibition moves away from a chronological approach and instead adopts a thematic structure that invites observation, dialogue, and comparison. The works are presented in unexpected conversations that reveal affinities, tensions, and resonances between pieces from different periods. This approach makes it possible to understand architecture not only as a technical discipline, but also as a cultural expression deeply rooted in its territory and, at the same time, open to global influences.

The itinerary includes a wide range of architectural materials: sketches that capture the initial creative gesture, drawings and plans that define forms and structures, models that give volume to ideas, and photographs that document their life and impact. Together, these elements offer an intimate view of the architectural creation process, often invisible to the general public.

In addition, the exhibition incorporates works of art and design (paintings, sculptures, furniture, and other objects) that build bridges between visual languages and different ways of interpreting space. This combination is not ornamental; it reflects a desire to show how architecture is in constant dialogue with the arts and how, taken together, they contribute to imagining ways of life, aesthetics, and social forms. The result is an expanded reading of Catalan architectural heritage that transcends disciplinary boundaries and places architecture at the heart of a shared creative ecosystem.

With around four hundred works, the exhibition offers a collective perspective that reflects expressive movements, social contexts, and cultural transformations. It invites careful looking, recognition of the diversity of authors, and an understanding of architectural heritage as a living organism: a set of ideas in continuous transformation.

The exhibition also seeks to be a space for discovery and reflection, capable of engaging both professionals and those encountering the subject for the first time. It is an opportunity to reaffirm the role of architecture in shaping collective identity and to show how, over time, seny and rauxa have coexisted in the creation of spaces that define how we live, relate to one another, and imagine the future.

The new realist

The new realist. Catalan and balearic architecture from the 2008 crisis

The new realist is the exhibition at the Disseny Hubthat shows the work of a group of Catalan and Balearic architects – those we call ‘new realists’ – who, following the 2008 crisis and aware that a change of cycle was taking place both in society and in the profession, redefined new parameters in the exercise of architecture.

Digital Impact

Digital Impact the exhibition at Disseny Hub: events on Thursday June 22th

Digital Impact is an exhibition, but more than that, it is an experience; it is a city to explore and a map to name those people creating art’s present and future. It is a door to a revolutionary world, a bridge from Barcelona to the immersive, the colour, the shapes and the limitless imagination.

ROUND TABLE / 22 OF JUN / 18:30H to 19:00H ‘Can digital culture be the future of the “Barcelona brand”?’
Barcelona and, by extension, Catalonia, has a rich, fertile, diverse ecosystem of agents working in the field of digital culture. Events such as the Digital Impact exhibition or Sónar’s 30th anniversary prove the importance and maturity of the city’s digital arts and culture sector, while posing a challenge to the city and the country: can we become an international leader in this field? What are the deficiencies or difficulties that this ecosystem faces, and how can we correct them to capitalize on its potential?

CONVERSATION + DEMO / 22 OF JUN / 19:15H A 19:45H Conversation/demo on AI and music, with AWWZ, UPC and Sónar

Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming the digital backbone of our lives, affecting every aspect of entertainment, culture and communication. Launched in 2021 by Sónar, the UPC and betéve, the AI and Music S+T+ARTS Festival explored the role of these new technologies in our lives, taking music as an example.

As part of Digital Impact, this transdisciplinary team will describe the process of co-creation, in which genre classification intersected with AI and performance. During the talk, they will present this specially trained AI, which translates YouTube comments into song suggestions, and AWWZ will give us a small demo of how it works.

Knock on Wood! sustainability and environment

Knock on Wood!  Design, Wood and Sustainability exhibition at Barcelona Disseny Hub.

During this autumn-winter season the Disseny Hub hosts the ‘Knock on Wood!  Design, Wood and Sustainability’ exhibition within the Museu del Disseny temporary exhibition programme.

The display, which can be visited from 2 November onwards, includes 420 pieces made from wood used to create designs applied to various fields such as construction, automobiles, aeronautics, the textile sector, acoustics, the health and energy sectors, among others.

blank‘Knock on Wood! Design, Wood and Sustainability’, curated by Martí Boada and Pilar Vélez, reclaims this material – wood – due to its sustainable nature with regards the planet and for its contribution to circular bioeconomy. Using the wooden objects on display, and from the design perspective, a tour is given providing insight on the relationship of wood and human life throughout history and highlights the objects, artefacts and designs that have meant a turning point in human cultural evolution.

From the Schöningen spears, the oldest wooden design known to humankind (about three hundred thousand years ago), down to today, the use of wood has been a constant feature although in modern times it has often been replaced by other materials. In the last few decades we have been experiencing an increase in its use and a recovery. So, with ‘Knock on Wood! Design, Wood and Sustainability’ we present elements made out of in wood ranging from the Schöningen spears and some ladles from the Neolithic period to contemporary applications such as MHM (Module Habitat Mediterranean) homes (the prototype of a real-size home made from wood, cork and straw which responds to the demands and challenges to be able to face the environmental crisis).

The proposal forms part of the annual conference of the European Forest Institute, which has named Barcelona as the European Forest City in 2022. The objective of this initiative is precisely to raise awareness of the great value of European forests.

The exhibition can be visited at the Design Museum until 22 January 2023.

Yet another year the FAD associations are showing the public the projects longlisted in the different prizes organized in each one of its disciplines: graphic design and visual communication, industrial design, architecture and interior design. As a whole, the show provides a valuable overview of the year’s best design, a selection endorsed by the judgment of juries comprised of prestigious professionals who have appraised the excellence, originality and conceptual innovation of the projects entered in the competitions.

The exhibition is divided into three domains:

Graphic design and visual communication, which features the prize-winning works in the ADG Laus Awards organized by the FAD’s Art Directors and Graphic Designers’ Association, produced by both professionals and students.
Industrial Design and Design Culture, with the works longlisted for the ADI Awards organized by the FAD’s Industrial Design Association. They encompass three prizes: the Delta Awards for Industrial Design, the ADI Medals for Design Students and the ADI Culture Awards for projects that contribute to the culture of design.
Architecture and Interior Design, which includes the shortlisted and longlisted works of the FAD Awards for Architecture and Interior Design in its different categories, and the Habitàcola Awards for architecture and design students. These recognitions are organized by the ARQUIN-FAD, the FAD’s Interdisciplinary Association of Space Design.

Four multidisciplinary itineraries can also be followed in the exhibition, three of them aligned with the principles of the New European Bauhaus, plus a fourth one on technological innovation:

Beauty: an overview of original projects that go above and beyond their instrumental function or character, enrich the aesthetic experience and stand out for their formal qualities.
Sustainability: an itinerary around projects that are respectful of environment and biodiversity and encourage circularity and the reduction of polluting emissions.
Inclusivity: an overview to discover projects that encourage accessibility and diversity through dialogue between cultures, disciplines, genders and ages.
Technological innovation: the route highlighting projects that explore the possibilities offered by technology, materials and new processes and techniques for creation.
This year the exhibition The best design of the year, includes a proposal to visit it as a family, an educational resource in the form of free-dynamic play. It is intended for children between 6 and 11 years of age so that they discover through play what good design consists of and which are the values that characterize it.

Arquinset’21: «Interiorisme»
