Barcelona Design Week 2023

The Barcelona Design Week (BDW) takes place from 16th to 28th October, with an extensive programme that includes installations, exhibitions, showrooms, talks, workshops and open days, created by Barcelona Design Centre in 2006, this is the annual event on design and creativity in Barcelona.

BDW 2023 is a very special edition, number 18, our coming of age. In addition, this edition is expressly associated with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals declared by the United Nations.

Faced with a global scenario increasingly marked by uncertainty, complexity and volatility, design is a key element for people’s present and future, to create a human future. In this sense, this year we have set ourselves a clear goal, to launch a global initiative to promote SDG goal number 18 and it becomes our motto: Design for Human Future.

Halfway to achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda, launched in 2015, now is the time to take a realistic view of what has been achieved so far and what is still pending. And, for this reason, at BDW we believe that it is time to give design the importance it has and deserves by launching this transversal initiative.

BDW is the first design week proposing a SDG on design and is a member of the World Design Weeks network, whose headquarters are in Barcelona. The network consists of nearly 40 design festivals around the world on design and creativity fields.

BDW is organised by Barcelona centre de Disseny and promoted by Barcelona City Council, in collaboration with FAD Fostering Arts and Design and Disseny Hub Barcelona (DHub).

Barcelona Design Week ’21

An October full of design all around the city with the Barcelona Design Week ’21.

From October 7th to 30th the BDW City Festival, Barcelona Design Week ’21 is being held, with a programme of activities addressed primarily to the general public.

As the name of this second edition indicates, the festival will extend all around Barcelona in order for the public to enjoy the city’s creative potential. And within the framework of this event, the Districtes Disseny (“Design Districts”) programme has been set in motion as an initiative for involving different agents of the city in this festival.

By means of a call to participate in it, the programme of the BDW City Festival has been filled with exhibitions, talks, workshops and presentations related with design, creativity and innovation which will take place in different spaces of the districts of Barcelona: galleries, shops, showrooms and design studios, among others. Special attention must also be drawn to the urban installation The Design Cubes in the Diagonal, composed of eight cubes located along the Avinguda Diagonal aimed at explaining the role of design in our everyday lives and highlighting the singularity of Barcelona and its spaces.

In total, the BDW City Festival will include around eighty activities, most of them presential, to be held in spaces like La Farinera of El Clot, the Roca Barcelona Gallery, the Galeria Il·lacions, La Muriel, Cal Tip and MINIM, in addition to the Design Museum and the Disseny Hub Barcelona, which will host conferences and workshops like ‘Live Research: Who is designing the cities of 2050?’, B Citizen Lab and Digital Trends 22/23, with the participation of Simon, a winner of the National Design Prize awarded by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness. A special mention should also be made of the two activities organised by Kave Home, a Mediterranean brand of furniture design and decoration which makes sustainability one of its essential traits. A conference will be held on the 20th and a workshop on the 26th.

As a new feature, this year the BDW City Festival presents the Food Design Week, with a series of activities on food design for all types of public, from families and people interested in the culinary world to students and professionals, with workshops, exhibitions and talks on art and gastronomy. Alongside the Food Design Week, other very interesting proposals are:

Under the motto “Think, Design, Act”, this edition of the BDW has been held in a hybrid format and in two different periods. The first, addressed to the professional public, took place from June 7th to 17th, and now this second block concludes an edition which aims to have an impact on the design and implementation of more sustainable models and settings which will be economically viable and focussed on people’s true needs.

The Barcelona Design Week is organised by the Barcelona Design Centre and has the support of the Barcelona City Council and the principal collaboration of the FAD Promotion of the Arts and Design and the Barcelona Design Museum.

Barcelona Design Week’19

The Barcelona Design Week will open its doors from 12 to 20 June to celebrate the 14th edition, a new opportunity to live and enjoy an unmissable event on design, creativity and innovation in Barcelona and one of the most important Design Weeks of the international calendar (Best architecture, design and technology events for 2019 per Dezeen). The BDW is member of the World Design Weeks network.

A city event, for the city.

The Barcelona Design Week 2019 will open with a very clear goal: to bring design to people and involve the industry’s main actors in the city to share Barcelona’s design vitality with the world and the city, enhance its social and economic importance and invite the citizens to experience it. Over a week all design lovers will enjoy an extensive programme encompassing more than 120 activities open to the city, prominent among them exhibitions, workshops, talks, open doors, but also activities aimed more at the professional public to create business opportunities and facilitate the exchange of knowledge.

The profession, the young talent, the recognition of design excellence and culture provided by FAD. The enterprise, strategic value in terms of innovation, sustainability and competitiveness as well as the promotion of the Barcelona city brand, led by BCD. And the Museu del Disseny as the principal collaborator, contributing its heritage and public dimension together with its dissemination capacity.

La Barcelona Design Week 2019 is directed by BCD Barcelona Centre de Disseny, organised by FAD Fostering Arts and Design and BCD, in collaboration with Museu del Disseny, driven by Barcelon City Council, and supported by the Government of Catalonia.

Design in Diagonal: Experience 12 Kilometres of Creativity!

Design will be crossing the city of Barcelona during the Barcelona Design Week with a tour of creative activities for different spaces that are spread out across the almost 12 kilometres of Diagonal Avenue, a unique axis in Barcelona that will be a hotspot of design and creativity for a week.

This year, the BDW is hosting the first edition of “Design in Diagonal”, an initiative promoted by BCD Barcelona Design Centre in collaboration with The Creative Net, with the participation of flagship stores, shop windows, hotels, restaurants and other featured spaces on the city’s main artery. These spaces will open their doors to the public to show off their interpretation of this year’s motto for the Barcelona Design Week, “Transitions”, through various creatives whose goal is to help the public get a closer look at the role of design.

Exhibitions, round tables, architectural routes, talks, workshops and installations will be just a few of the key aspects to experiencing the transitions proposed by the creatives: urban, social, cultural, disruptive or digital transitions will invade some of the most representative sites on Diagonal Avenue.
