Mark Burry IAAC Lectures Series

Tuesday, 20th of February, 2024 at IAAC Lecture Series – Mark Burry

Mark Burry is a registered architect and the Founding Director for Swinburne University of Technology’s Smart Cities Research Institute (SCRI). His role is to lead the development of a whole-of-university research approach to ‘urban futures’, helping ensure that our future cities anticipate and meet the needs of all – smart citizens participating in the development of smart cities.

Mark Burry is a practising architect who has published internationally on two main themes: putting theory into practice with regard to procuring ‘challenging’ architecture, and the life, work and theories of the architect Antoni Gaudí. He has been Senior Architect to the Sagrada Família Basilica Foundation since 1979, pioneering distant collaboration with his colleagues based on-site in Barcelona concluding in late 2016.

Recent publications include an edited 4-volume 1,600-page collection of papers setting out the grounds for Digital Architecture as a critical concept, including a 9,000-word introduction to the set with accompanying introductions to each volume (Routledge – Taylor & Francis, March 2020), and an edition of AD titled ‘Urban Futures – Designing the Digitalised City’ (Wiley, May-June, 2020)

After Gaudí: how might AI have helped us learn from Gaudí’s surviving model fragments for his Sagrada Família Basilica design?

Mark Burry’s talk will outline his experience in helping unpack the mysteries of Gaudí’s final design models for the Sagrada Famíilia Basilica. He will describe Gaudí’s struggles realising his projects more as sculptural undertakings than architecture, and how he shifted dimensions to bring an invisible rationality to his modus operandi. Burry will first examine Gaudí’s analogue design process, and then critically examine the role of design computation for a deep dive into Gaudí’s creative world in both the digital and post digital eras. This will lead to some general observations on the power of creativity, and both some limits as well as opportunities for AI to influence future architectural design seen through the lens of Gaudí’s extraordinary endeavour.

Great tutorial on Barcelona’s urban evolution
We enjoyed this Barcelona & Urbanism tour! It was more like a private lecture with Pia, an academic who really knows and enjoys her stuff! The tour provided a broad overview of Barcelona’s evolution, from a urbanistic point of view, giving valuable context to the other sites, museums, etc. that we visited during our stay in this vibrant city. We also visited places showcasing how Barcelona continues to evolve and deal with its urbanistic challenges. Be ready to walk and bring water!

Amazing tour
Pia is an amazing guide. She provided us with a review of the history of Barcelona going back to Roman times, how the city first developed in the Barri and then expanded out, and how social conditions and architectural evolution impacted the design and development of the different districts and buildings. This tour then puts into perspective a fascinating collection of different buildings–some new, some repurposed factories, and urban planning.

Wonderful Tour!
My wife and I had a great time with Jelena on the architecture tour! She didn’t just talk about Gaudi, but gave us a lot of background on the city and modernism writ large. We also saw incredible work from Gaudi’s teacher and other contemporaries.

Jelena was super knowledgable and answered all our questions. If you’re into Barcelona’s architecture, you should definitely check out this tour!

EUMiesAwards 2024

The list of nominees for the EUMiesAwards 2024 has recently been announced. Architecture is a slow process that adapts to social, political and economic changes. The EUMiesAwards takes this statement into account and pursues the following objectives:

blank

AV62 Arquitectos. Photo José Hevia

— to recognise and commend excellence in European architecture in conceptual, social, cultural, technical and constructive terms
— to highlight the European city as a model for the sustainably smart city, contributing to a sustainable European economy
— to promote transnational architectural commissions throughout Europe and abroad
— to increase the incorporation of architectural professionals from the EU Member States and those countries that conclude an agreement with the EU
— to cultivate future clients and promoters
— to find business opportunities in a broader global market
— to highlight the involvement of the European Union in supporting architecture as an important element that reflects both the diversity of European architectural expression and its role as a unifying element to define a common European culture.

The Prize objectives aim at promoting and understanding the significance of quality and reflecting the complexity of Architecture’s own significance in terms of technological, constructional, social, economic, cultural and aesthetic achievements.

Architecture’s significance —linked with the construction market— has a social Impact and transmits a cultural message. Quality therefore refers to universal values of generic buildings, independent from their programmes: the essence of things rather than their formal values.

Among the nominees there are several Spanish architecture studios:

peris+toral.arquitectes LIVING IN LIME – 42 social housing in Son Servera

AV62 Arquitectos, Day centre for young people with autism spectrum disorder in Derio, Spain

MAIO; Studio Nomadic; Studio Peisaj, Nursery. 1306 plants for Timișoara, Romania

Óscar Miguel Ares. CONTEXTOS DE ARQUITECTURA Y URBANISMO, Municipal Pools in Castromonte, Spain

ANDRES JAQUE / OFFICE FOR POLITICAL INNOVATION, Reggio School in Madrid, Spain

HARQUITECTES, Social housing 1737 in Gavà, Spain

SUMA Arquitectura, Gabriel García Márquez Library in Barcelona, Spain

Our most sincere congratulations to all the nominees and to… may the best one win!

Sagrada Familia Special Tour

On our Sagrada Familia special tour, you will enjoy two of the most emblematic and most visited monuments in Barcelona led by an official tour guide that specializes in “Modernismo”.

This tour gives you the opportunity to experience the splendor of “Modernismo”, an artistic movement, where architectural and natural elements come together to compose a magic visual symphony.

Sagrada Famila Antoni Gaudi 1883 (The Holy Family)

This is the most recognizable religious building in the world. The scaffolding and giant cranes now seem to be a permanent fixture of this construction site, whose date of completion is estimated for 2026.

The basilica, which resembles a giant forest from the inside, can only have been designed by a genius: Antoni Gaudi.

Visiting the Sagrada Familia grants the individual the opportunity to experience an architectural instrument of sound and light that is one of a kind. With more than 4.7 million tourists a year a visit to this monument is fundamental to the understanding of Gaudi’s work.

blank

Park Güell. Antoni Gaudi 1900-1914

Eusebi Güell, developer, patron and fervent admirer of Gaudi, wanted to make a private enclave for the privileged class outside the city, a paradise, a garden city. But the project failed, and the site became a park where there is not a single straight line and the boundary between the man-made and the natural is not clearly defined.

The Park Güell is the most visited public space in the city and we are sure the design will make an impact on the senses.

blank

Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. Lluis Domènech i Montaner 1902-1930

This Modernista area or enclosure, was designed by Lluis Domènech i Montaner, one of the main advocates of Catalan Modernism. It was declared a UNESCO site in 1997. It is a

Project of grand scope, with a main entrance building, twenty-seven separate pavilions all connected by a series of tunnels.

The tour of the main building presents the visitor with spectacular colorful spaces, tile details, sculptures and mosaics. The tour continues into the garden areas and the connecting tunnels; an experience that immerses you in the magic of Modernism unique to Barcelona.

Responsive cities 2023

Responsive cities 2023: Barcelona – 27th and 28th of November 2023

The 2023 edition of Responsive cities 2023 focuses on “Collective Intelligence Design” and takes place within the framework of the Green Skills for Cities project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union and developed by the Advanced Architecture Group of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia -IAAC- (Spain), Vienna University of Economics and Business -WU- (Austria), University of Genoa -UNIGE- (Italy), and European Association for Local Democracy -ALDA- (France).

blank

Responsive Cities 2023 Symposium seeks to delve into the emerging paradigm of collective intelligence in the processes of city making. As cities continue to evolve in complexity and interconnectedness in the context of the climate emergency, embracing new forms of intelligence that go beyond human perspectives becomes the cornerstone for the future of urbanity.

Collective Intelligence Design promotes an emerging collective intelligence paradigm that empowers the applications of co-creation, following generative processes of both the living and the machine.
This post anthropocentric approach highlights a unique combination of crowd wisdom and artificial intelligence that, together with other forms of intelligences including animal, vegetable, or microbial, marks a significant milestone in the creation of our future green cities.

By embracing new forms of intelligence in design, architecture and cities can transcend anthropocentric perspectives and cultivate a new ecological, technological but also cultural paradigm of inhabitation where inclusivity lies in its core. This shift recognizes that cities are alive and dynamic ecosystems interconnected with the natural world, while acknowledging the interdependencies among humans, non human, cultural and technological others.
