BARCELONA & GAUDI Walking Tour, something else than a typical tour…

Hi Walkers! This week we continue sharing with you our differents Walking Tours. This time Barcelona & Gaudi, a different way to discover Barcelona modernism through Gaudi’s masterpiece!

Along the Modernism Route, we will trace the sinuous dream path that took Antoni Gaudí from his social concerns to a total absorption with the divine, until he finally became “the last great cathedral builder.”

Our aim is to delve into the architectural essence of the Master and dig deep into his visual power, which is what made him an inspiration for the Surrealists and has earned him the honor of being the Best-Known Spanish Architect.

Our discussion will focus on a set of turning points that include a project in early 20th-century Manhattan, the last commission from his patron, Eusebi Güell, and his first architectural steps with the Sagrada Família.

We will talk about eclecticism and the end of modernism, the Crypt of Colony Güell and the Sagrada Família, utopian socialism, positivist materialism, the intellectual bourgeoisie, the Spanish Civil War, anarchism, beatification and deliquescent surfaces.

We will see the Antoni Tàpies Foundation and Casa Lleó Morera by Domènech i Montaner, Casa Amatller by Puig i Cadafalch, some hidden Eixample courtyards and, of course, Casa Calvet, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà by Antoni Gaudí.

Walk through the smart, parametric city in search of Barcelona’s future!

Jean Nouvel, Ricardo Bofill, Rafael Moneo, Fermín Vázquez, MBM Arquitectes, Jordi Badia, Josep Benedito, Batlle & Roig, David Chipperfield, Rahola Vidal and Enric Ruiz-Geli: can all these chefs cook up a unique, tasty stew?

This is an urban walking reflection on the main aims of urbanism and how they have been applied in the 22@ district in Poblenou, once a neighborhood full of workshops that is now becoming revitalized in an attempt to recapture the spirit of its industrial heyday.

While we try to catch some of the stardust coming off the Media-TIC building (2011 WAF winner: World Building of the Year) and rub shoulders with architecture’s brightest stars, we’ll talk about independence, patents, parametric architecture, cradle to cradle, superblocks, the carbon footprint and, of course, Ildefons Cerdà, the Master and Founder.

“Urbanism walking tour – in L’Example”

We had a great time with Martina, an architect and illustrator. She came ready prepared with a giant folder of excellent demonstration props and materials…maps and imagery to interpret our surroundings. She was attentive and thoughtful and very responsive to our badgering questions! It ended up just being two of us (my wife and myself), but the tour wasn’t cancelled and so it was excellent value for money. It was my 40th birthday treat and it was very, very worth it.

“Excellent start to our trip in BCN”

We spent a gorgeous morning walking with Martina on the Barcelona + Gaudi tour – it was so full of history, knowledge and context that it set us up to appreciate the entire city and our entire trip through a richer lens. We loved every moment of it and learned so much. Barcelona is an amazing destination, but the tour was really a standout. The tours or audioguides at many of the sights are perfunctory at best, and going on the walk really helped us see everything with better nuance. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

Excellent tour about Gaudi’s Masterpiece!

Hi Walkers! Today some amazing reviews about our Barcelona & Gaudi  walking tour and our guides…

“Great interaction with locals and you learn so much more!!!”

Had a perfect walking tour with Miguel hosting us through the walk on Gaudi’s architecture. It was extremely informative and interesting. Miguel was very passionate about sharing his ideas on architecture and giving us way more stories about the city of Barcelona than I would have expected from the tour.

I would encourage anyone and everyone to attend at least one tour, as I would have if my itinerary allowed. Next time, the Market tour!!! As Arnold would say it, I will be back!!!

Loved the way the walk was organized and explained – it linked the history of the city with the architectural movements around the world and it explained in great detail the innovative aspects of the Catalonian modernism. Our guide, Martina was a lovely person, friendly who showed great knowledge and passion for what she does.

Today we want to share with you our Barcelona & Urbanism Walking Tour, an amazing way to discover Barcelona through its urbanism.

TRAVEL WITH US TO THE ORIGINS OF MODERN BARCELONA.

This is a trip to the origins of the guidelines laid out by Ildefons Cerdà on the plain of Barcelona. He was responsible for designing a 133m x 133m grid without borders, hierarchies or suburbs that has given Barcelona the status of an advanced city.

In the summer of 1859, a cramped, almost medieval Barcelona embarked on the journey of its expansion plan with the central government’s stamp of approval. The history of the project was marked by two historical events: the first involved the personal achievement of designer Ildefons Cerdà, who went beyond the specific reality of the time and created the General Theory of Urbanization; the second involved the city of Barcelona’s resistance to the plan and the plot to discredit the progressive-minded engineer.

The tour will leave the Collage Building by Rahola Vidal Arquitectes and gradually descend into Cerdà’s grid while we travel in time from the birth of cities to 21st-century Barcelona, through the modern era, the birth of the railway, the Barcelona model and the 22@ district. We will finish our expedition on the roof of Richard Rogers’ Las Arenes Mall Center, where we will reveal and analyze Barcelona’s future projects.

As we wander through courtyards, avenues and squares to feel the pulse of local Barcelona, we’ll talk about communication and the Internet, ways and byways, enlightened despotism, 22@ and the infinite architectural richness of Cerdà’s Barcelona.

“Fabulous guided tour”

We are three students in Landscape architecture and architecture. We had a private tour about the city, new urbanism and The of Barcelona guided by Jordi.
Jordi is a very experiences architect so the tour is ver detail and professional, the best architecture tour!
The tour started with historical facts of Barcelona from its walled compacted city to the highly regulated mash city plan today.
Then it continued on to the market and the planned city center project. Briefly it also talked about some big events in Barcelona and how it affect the city plan( Olympic Games). After talking about the connection between different district by different buildings, it went detailed into the historical industrial area, talking about the problems and the solutions. So very innovative buildings were introduced in great depth.
It was so eye opening for us and and we were so impressed! Highly recommended for anyone interested in the topic since you can learn so much than you can ever image!!!

“Having lived in Barcelona for some time a few years ago, I booked this tour so that my wife could get to know the city and see some of Gaudi’s most famous private buildings. We got very lucky and had a small group of only five people including our guide, two of whom happened to be guides for the Foodlovers tour company and added to the tour by giving us hints as to the best restaurants that we walked by.

I was totally blown away by the way in which the tour opened up the city not only to her but to me also, despite thinking that I knew the city quite well. The way our guide explained the planning of L’Eixample, the history (social, political, and technical) of the modernist architectural movement in Catalonia, and then situated Gaudi’s work within those histories was revelatory. We both walked away with the feeling that we had a real grasp not only on the architectural genius of Gaudi but on the history and plan of the city as a whole. 10/10 would go again”
