“Best tour in Barcelona”

“As an architect visiting the capital of Modernisme for the first time (with my non-architect wife), I wanted a tour that would give us a good introduction to Barcelona & Gaudi, so we selected that tour. From all the touring that we did during the week we were in Barcelona, my wife and I both agree that the BAW was the best.

Our tour guide, Jordi, met us at the easy-to-find rendezvous spot and started the tour as soon as we arrived, as we were the only ones on this tour. As the details on the website are somewhat vague, I wasn’t sure what we would be seeing or if we were going to be going inside any Gaudí buildings. While we did stop by (but did not go in) the 3 Gaudí buildings listed in the tour description, we spent most of the time learning about the expansion of the city under the Ildefons Cerdà plan. We had spent the first few days of our vacation in el Born so, other than a trip to the Sagrada Familia, this was our first experience with l’Eixample. Jordi explained how this area of the city came to be, showed us one of the first mansions in the “new city” and explained how the architecture of this area developed. He pointed out the work of other architects who were much more prolific than Gaudí and helped us to understand the roles each of them played in the development of the city. He did an excellent job of explaining what Modernisme is and isn’t. He also showed us one of the many “pocket parks” in the city and explained why and how today’s urban planners were trying to improve the quality of life for the residents of Barcelona.

As there were only the three of us, our tour was more like a dialogue than a tour. We learned so much about the city as we walked along some of the major thoroughfares. (About halfway through the tour, we were given the option of walking more or less for the rest of the tour – we took more and got to see even more.) We occasionally had to rephrase a question so that Jordi could understand what we were asking but we always got a thorough, professional answer. The visual aids mentioned in Victoria M’s review were extremely helpful. The tour ended at la Pedrera after 2.5 hours so we grabbed a quick lunch then toured the building. (This sort of last minute thing can only be done off-season. If you are going during tourist season, I suggest you confirm the ending location and time with BAW and but tickets for this tour ahead of time. It is well worth it and is an excellent ending to this tour.)

El proper dijous 3 de desembre a les 19h  comença el cicle organitzat des d’Arquitectes per l’Arquitectura, al voltant de la temàtica ‘BALEAR’. La trobada serà a l’espai Barcelona Trespa Design Center, davant del Mercat del Born (c. de La RIbera, 5)

Hi participaran Tomeu Ramis (Flexo Arquitectura), Juan Miguel Tizón (RipollTizón) i Elías Torres (Martínez Lapeña-Torres Arquitectos). Tots ells han construït, en diferent mesura i diferents moments, un bon recull d’obres a les Illes Balears i, o en són oriünds, o tenen la seva seu professional allà.

Moderarà la taula l’Andreu Manresa, corresponsal del diari El País a les Illes Balears els últims anys, que ajudarà a aportar una radiografia del panorama arquitectònic a les illes ajudat alhora per les obres presentades pels ponents i per la pròpia interlocució de les seves experiències.

La trobada té una duració prevista de 1h 30min. L’aforament serà lliure fins a esgotar les places.

Durant l’acte i al seu acabament Trespa oferirà als assistents la beguda i els snacks de cortesia habituals.

Ábalos+Sentkiewicz (AS+) is an international architecture office settled in Madrid, Cambridge and Shanghai, directed by Iñaki Ábalos and Renata Sentkiewicz. AS+ projects are internationally recognized and have been subject of monographic and collective exhibitions in prestigious centers such as Architectural Association London, Pavillon de l’Arsenale-Paris, MoMA-NYC and the Venice Biennale. AS+ professional and theoretical work has won multiple awards and been featured in leading international publications and books.

Iñaki Ábalos is Founder and Director of AS+, Professor in Residence and Chair of the Department of Architecture at the GSD Harvard University and Chaired Professor at ETSAM, UPM. In the past years he has been Founder and Director of Ábalos & Herreros and taught in celebrated institutions such as the Architectural Association, EPFL and Columbia, Cornell and Princeton Universities.

Alexei Novikov is the President of Habidatum (Big Data, Urban Analytics) and the Dean of Post-Graduate School of Urban Studies and Planning of Moscow. He holds a PhD in Regional and Urban Studies from the Russian Academy of Sciences and is a visiting professor at Oxford University (UK), Birmingham University (UK) and Florida International University, among others. Novikov acts also a consultant of the Urban Institute and the World Bank on infrastructure and municipal finance.

Habidatum is an international company assisting urban planners and businesses in understanding the hyper-dynamic urban environment. Their services are built around a powerful urban data platform capable of collecting, storing, processing and visualizing quantitative and qualitative urban data.

El dimarts 17 de novembre a les 19.45 h, en el marc de la 2a edició del festival de filosofia Barcelona Pensa, els arquitectes Laura García, Marta Llorente, Joan Maroto i Sílvia Sasot reflexionaran sobre quina relació amb l’espai acompanya les transformacions socials i polítiques que estem vivint. La sessió la moderarà Ester Jordana, investigadora al Departament d’Història de la Filosofia, Estètica i Filosofia de la Cultura de la Universitat de Barcelona.

L’acte es realitza en col·laboració amb la Facultat de Filosofia de la Universitat de Barcelona, i forma part de les més de vint activitats que el Festival de Filosofia Barcelona Pensa duu a terme la setmana del 16 al 21 de novembre de 2015.

Els espais arquitectònics emergeixen històricament i es configuren en funció de certes relacions i formes socials. L’espai no és quelcom passiu on les relacions simplement succeeixen; les formes espacials disposen, vehiculen, possibiliten o dificulten certs tipus de relació. Hi ha una arquitectura de l’escola, del museu, de la universitat, de la presó, de la fàbrica, però també de la casa, de les habitacions… Una arquitectura que pren una determinada forma al segle XIX i que vehicula tot un conjunt de relacions pedagògiques, afectives, estètiques o laborals. Per tant, des d’un punt de vista crític i transformador, cal preguntar-se quina relació amb l’espai acompanyaria les transformacions socials i polítiques que estem vivint. Si el model de família ha canviat, no haurien de canviar les cases? Si les relacions pedagògiques han canviat, no haurien de canviar les escoles? Si les experiències estètiques han canviat, no haurien de canviar els museus? Però més enllà de pensar simplement com donar noves formes espacials a aquestes relacions. No cal preguntar-se si no ha canviat ja la pròpia concepció que tenim d’espai? No és l’espai mateix el que es concep de manera relacional i en transformació? A partir d’aquestes preguntes, convidem a joves arquitectes que reflexionen sobre aquesta transformació i a compartir les seves inquietuds i les seves preguntes.

“Market tour and Gaudi tour”

We had two tours, one private market tour (amazing with Miguel). He has fascinating story to tell you about how the market came to be, and the “secrets” you would never notice on your own. We are not architects, but enjoyed seeing the passion and story from an architect. The story what created the city borders of old Barcelona, and how it came to be over history and what the main roads were back in the day was also helpful to understand why the city was designed the way it was. The Gaudi tour is also good. It does not include visiting the inside of the Gaudi houses, or Familia Sograda, so you need to book this separately. Recommend these tours highly!

Xavier De Kestelier is joint head of Foster + Partners’ Specialist Modelling Group (SMG) the architecture practice’s multidisciplinary research and development in-house consultancy.

His team acts as a design and technology catalyst and is involved in ground breaking research in the field of large-scale 3D printing. They have been part of a consortium set up by the European Space Agency (ESA) to explore the possibilities of 3D printing to construct lunar habitations. Addressing the challenges of transporting materials to the moon, the study is investigating the use of lunar soil, known as regolith, as building matter.

Xavier has been a Visiting Professor at Ghent University, Adjunct Professor at Syracuse University and is currently a Teaching Fellow at The Bartlett School of Architecture. Since 2010, he has been one of the directors of Smartgeometry, a non-profit educational organisation for computational design and digital fabrication.

Fernando Menis Architect stands as a practice of high-quality architecture, with a strong craft workshop and a deep interest for the reuse of natural and environmental resources. The work of Fernando Menis has been awarded with the Spanish National Architecture and Design Award and recognized on several occasions by the Canary Islands Regional Architecture Award, the FAD and the Spanish Architecture Exhibition Awards. Menis has participated to the Venice Biennale and his projects have been exhibited by MoMA NY, Aedes Berlin and GA Tokyo.

Fernando Menis is a professor at the European University of Canarias and Chairman of the Laboratory for Innovation in Architecture, Design and Advanced Tourism of Tenerife. He participates regularly as a speaker and jury member at Harvard GSD, Columbia University, ESA Paris, TU Berlin and Akbild Vienna.

Hoy jueves día 22 de Octubre de 2015 se llevará a cabo la jornada de celebración de la entrega de las becas/arquia 2015 que tendrá lugar en la Sala de Actos de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona.

En dicho acto, Juan Domingo Santos, jurado único de la presente convocatoria dará una conferencia que tendrá el mismo título que el tema del concurso: ‘Una torre para volar’.

Asimismo, se hará la presentación del tema del concurso de la XVII convocatoria por parte del próximo jurado Jordi Badia cuyo tema es “Una capilla laica”. El jurado propone ‘diseñar un lugar que proporcione en la gran ciudad, una experiencia parecida a la que puedes experimentar cuando después de una larga ascensión a una montaña, encuentras una pequeña capilla en la cumbre y decides entrar en ella. Soledad y silencio. Una cámara de vacío. Se propone un emplazamiento en el centro de una gran ciudad. La plaza de las Glòries en Barcelona. Un gran vacío urbano que será en un futuro un gran parque metropolitano. La pieza deberá, pues, atender a la situación provisional actual del emplazamiento pero con la mirada puesta en el futuro, cuando la arquitectura quedará plenamente integrada dentro del paisaje del parque.’

Mañana, viernes 23, se realizará una visita arquitectónica guiada por la ciudad de Barcelona con explicaciones de los arquitectos autores de las obras que se visitarán: el Edificio Mediatic de Enric Ruiz-Geli; el Museo Can Framis de Jordi Badía y Jordi Framis; la Torre Telefónica Diagonal 00 de Enric Massip-Bosch; Las Torres Fira de Toyo Ito y B720 Fermín Vázquez; y el Edificio de Gas Natural del estudio EMBT Miralles Tagliabue
