“Informative and enjoyable tour

We booked BAW’s Gaudi walk before we left for Spain. It was easy to do and Miguel from BAW was prompt replying to questions by email. The only public Gaudi tour BAW had scheduled during our stay was on our last full day in Barcelona. Since the BAW tour included just the exteriors of the Gaudi buildings, the days prior to the tour we visited the interiors of the Gaudi buildings on our own.

By the day of the BAW tour, we were ‘Gaudi’ed’ out and we considered canceling or seeing if we could change to a different tour but we are so glad that we did not.

Joan from BAW was an excellent guide. We were extremely fortunate that we were the only ones on the tour that day. Not only did we learn about Gaudi but we also learned about the development of Barcelona and its Eixample neighbourhood. Joan covered the development of the modernist movement and pointed out interesting architectural elements and city planning concepts. He patiently answered our questions and explained concepts very clearly to us (though we love architecture neither of us has a background in the field). The time went by fast! If we visit Barcelona again, we will likely try BAW’s other tours as it would be interesting to learn more about the city, it’s architecture and development ( past, current and future). It was great to walk the beautiful city with someone so knowledgable about its history and architecture.”

BAW 1. ENRIC MIRALLES

Roman and Medieval Barcelona / Mercado de Santa Caterina / Angel’s Square / Forat de la Vergonya / What’s Architecture?…..

En marzo del año 2000 Enric Miralles visitó las excavaciones arqueológicas que habían pospuesto las obras de rehabilitación del Mercado de Santa Caterina, proyecto que junto a la reforma urbana interactúan con el lugar presente y ausente, haciendo explicitas las diferentes capas históricas acumuladas en el barrio. Tres meses más tarde fallecía y era enterrado en el Cementerio de Igualada, el más temprano de sus proyectos.

¿Quién fue Enric Miralles? y ¿Qué vínculo mantenía con el Mercado de Santa Caterina?

La BAW.1 es un viaje sosegado desde los cimientos de Barcelona hasta la realidad actual, acompañados por las ideas y modos de operar de Enric Miralles, genio en vida que junto a Benedetta Tagliabue diseñaron una de las más brillantes obras de arquitectura de esta ciudad, El Mercado de Santa Caterina.

In March 2000 Enric Miralles visited the archaeological excavations that had postponed the Rehabilitation of Santa Caterina Market, the project which, together with the urban reformation interact with the place present and absent, making explicit the different historical layers that had been piled up in the neighborhood. Three months later Miralles passed away and was buried in the Cemetery of Igualada, the earliest of his projects.

BAW 2. ANTONI GAUDÍ

The Example / Modernisme / Natural Gothic / Casa Batlló / Mysticism / Casa Milà / Builder of the Last Cathedral / Vanidad…..

A la edad de 31 años Antoni Gaudí recibió el encargo que marcaria definitivamente el devenir de sus días y para siempre la imagen de su ciudad adoptiva, Barcelona. Desde entonces la Sagrada Familia avanza infatigable, alimentada por las ansias de millones de visitantes, estrechando la distancia entre el sueño y su realidad.

La BAW.2 es el retrato de ese sueño sinuoso que llevó a Gaudí desde su inquietud por lo social, en una Barcelona en plena expansión metropolitana, hasta su inmersión en lo divino, viendo en la monumentalidad la síntesis final de lo arquitectónico y convirtiéndose así en “el último constructor de catedrales”.

Mientras recorramos la síntesis de su obra Modernista (casa Batlló y casa Milà) hablaremos de anarquismo y beatificación, de superficies delicuescentes y estructuras arbóreas, de catalanismo, burgueses y obispos e intentaremos aprender un poco de su Arquitectura.

At the age of 31, Antoni Gaudí received the commission that would mark his life and forever change the landscape of his adopted city, Barcelona. Since then, the Sagrada Familia advanced continuously, fed by the longing of millions of visitors, reducing the distance between the dream and its reality.

The BAW.2 is the portrait of this sinuous dream that took Gaudí from his interest in the social, through which he envisioned Barcelona in full metropolitan expansion at one Barcelona, until his absorption in the divine, seeing Monumentality as the final synthesis of the architectonic and becoming “the last cathedral’s builder”.

While covering the synthesis of his Modernist work (Casa Batlló house and Casa Milà) we will talk about anarchism and beatification, about deliquescent surfaces and wooded structures, of catalanism, bourgeoisies and bishops and we will try to learn a bit of his Architecture aswell.

BAW 3. ILDEFONS CERDA

What’s a city? / Revolución Industrial / Modernity / Vias e Intervias / Science of Urbanization / 22@ / Sidewalks …..

En verano de 1859 inicia su andadura la Barcelona del Presente, se aprueba el proyecto de su Ensanche y con él nacen dos iniciativas históricas: la primera personal de su diseñador D. Ildefons Cerdà por trascender lo concreto creando la nueva ciencia de la Urbanización y la otra de la ciudad de Barcelona por denostar y desprestigiar a este Ingeniero de ideas progresistas.

Con la BAW.3 viajaremos al origen de las líneas maestras que trazó Ildefons Cerdà sobre el plano de Barcelona, aquella malla cuadrangular de 133×133 m sin límites ni jerarquías ni periferias que ha otorgado a Barcelona la condición de ciudad racional y avanzada tanto técnica como socialmente.

Deambulando entre patios de manzana y la cuadrícula ilimitada hablaremos de comunicación e internet, de vías e intervias, de despotismo ilustrado y 22@ y de la riqueza arquitectónica de la Barcelona de Cerdà.

In Summer of 1859, the Barcelona of today started its journey with the approval of the project of its expansion and with the two historical initiatives born with it: the first personal of its designer M. Ildefons Cerdà went beyond the concrete creating the new science of Urbanization and the second one of the city of Barcelona to denounce and discredit the progressively-minded Engineer.

With the BAW.3 we will travel to the origins of the master lines Ildefons Cerdà drew on Barcelona’s plane, that quadrangular mesh of 133×133 m without limits or hierarchies or outskirts which has grant Barcelona the reputation of a technically and socially intelligent city.

Wandering around courtyards and the expansive grid we will talk about communication and internet, ways and between-ways, of enlightened despotism, 22@ and about the architectural richness of the Barcelona of Cerdà.

La Barcelona Romana/ the Catalan Gothic / Mercado de la Barceloneta / Reason vs Sense / El Somorrostro / Beasts and Gods ……

Primero como ciudad amurallada, retiro de legionarios itálicos, la llamaron Barcino. Más tarde, cuando el grito de “Santa Maria!” brotaba de las bocas de marinos y soldados, la Barcelona Medieval fue capital de armadores y mercaderes del Mare Nostrum. Y Luego modernista, obrera, industrial, olímpica e incluso un forum de culturas…pero por encima de todo Barcelona ha sido siempre una junto al Mar, el mar Mediterráneo.

La BAW 4 es una danza en el tiempo de acercamiento y desconfianza entre la Ciudad y el Mar, un ejemplo de la eterna lucha de la razón y el orden frente a la entropía social y urbana.

Viajando desde su origen hasta su futuro dialogaremos con murallas y ensanches, puertos y playas, ilustrados y canallas e intentaremos descubrir si estaba en lo cierto Aristóteles cuando afirmaba que más allá de las ciudades solo habitan Dioses y Bestias.

First of all as a Fortified city, retreat of italic legionaries, was called Barcino. Later on, when “Santa Maria!” was a shout in every soldier’s and sailor’s lips, the Medieval Barcelona was the capital of shipowners and merchants of the Mare Nostrum. And then modernist, worker, industrial, Olympic and even forum of cultures, but overall Barcelona has been always one with the sea, the Mediterranean Sea.

The BAW 4 is a dance in time of rapprochement and distrust, an example of the eternal fight of the reason and order against social and urban entropy.

Travelling from his Origins to the future we will talk of defense walls and extensions, ports and beaches, illustrated and swines and we will try to discover if Aristotle was right asserting that beyond the cities only live Gods and Beasts.

Our newest expedition…BAW 22@. RETHINKING CITIES is an urban walking reflection getting back the main aims of Urbanisms to check them at the 22@ district, an urban workshop hoping to be an economic redraw up of the ancient industrial neighbourhood Poblenou.

While we persue, between architecture stars, the tail of the Media-ITC (winner WAF 2011: World’s best building of the year), we will talk about independence, patents, parametric architecture, cradle to cradle, carbon footprint and some words about Ildefons Cerdà… the Master and Founder.
