DIETER DIETZ SPRING LECTURE SERIES 2017

Educated at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Dieter Dietz also studied at the Cooper Union in New York with Diller/Scofidio. in 1997, after working with Diane Lewis Architects, New York, and Herzog & de Meuron in Basel, he founded, with partner architect Urs Egg, UNDEND Architecture, a Zurich based architectural practice with award winning entries in national and international competitions. Currently he is building up dieterdietz.org, a firm engaged in projects in urban design, media and architecture. From 1996 to 1999, he taught as Junior Faculty with Prof. Marc Angélil at ETH Zurich. Since 2006 he is Associate Professor for Architectural Design at EPFL, Lausanne, and director of the ALICE laboratory in the ENAC faculty. He collaborates with the ALICE team on research projects at diverse scales with labs inside and outside EPFL. His teaching activities include the direction of the first year architectural design course as well as projects at master and thesis level.

JAIME COLL + JUDITH LECLERC > SPRING LECTURE SERIES 2017

Jaime Coll and Judith Leclerc, who founded their practice CollLeclerc in Barcelona in 1996, have become expert in three areas: Public space with the TMB Park, a pioneer man-made park on the roof of the bus station. Public housing, with several pilot projects, including the Londres-Villarroel complex and Public facilities with namely Sant Gregori School. Their work has appeared in more than 300 articles and been exhibited at several Venice and Spanish Biennals as well as in Frankfurt, Stockholm, Bordeaux, Basel, Paris, Phoenix, Genève and Mendrisio. In 2007 they received the awards: City of Barcelona of Architecture, IX Spanish Biennial and the Housing National Award and were selected by Herzog&De Meuron-Ai Weiwei for the Ordos 100 project in China. In 2014 they received the 2nd prize in the competition for the renewal of the Montreal Biodôme.

Jaime Coll is a Ph. D. Architect by ETSABarcelona, Extraordinary Doctorate Award, Fellow of the LeCorbusier Foundation in Paris and Fulbright Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Columbia University. Full Professor of Architectural Design at the ETSABarcelona since 1998.

Judith Leclerc is a M. Architect by Mc Gill University, Montréal and ETSABarcelona. Postgraduate in Architecture and sustainability, E. Sert Lecturer of Architectural Design at the ETSABarcelona since 2010 and previously at ETSARQ, Guest Professor at N.Y City College, University of Montréal and University of Calgary among others.

IAAC Lecture Series John Thackara

John Thackara travels the world in search of practical projects that restore the planet and realize a sustainable future. He writes about these stories at his blog (thackara.com) and in books; his most recent title is How To Thrive In the Next Economy (Thames & Hudson 2015).

John curated the celebrated Doors of Perception conference for 20 years – first in Amsterdam, later across India – and has led place discovery workshops in 40 countries. He directed the world’s first social innovation biennial, Dott 07 in England, and the first ecological city biennial, City Eco Lab in France. John is a Senior Fellow at the Royal College of Art in London, a visiting professor at SVA in New York, and an advisor on social-ecological innovation to cities, companies, and civil society.

Gunter Pauli is the founder of the Global ZERI Network, a foundation redesigning production and consumption into clusters of industries inspired by natural systems. His latest initiatives include the design of a solution for the plastic soup floating in the oceans and the creation of a protective zone with islands to avert rising sea levels.

Pauli has been visiting lecturer and professor at universities in on all continents, and Member of the Board of NGOs and private companies in Asia, USA and Latin America. He has advised governments, entrepreneurs and industry leaders on how to implement breakthrough innovations that permits society to better respond to the basic needs of all, starting with water, food, housing, health and energy.

Warren Neidich is an internationally recognised artist whose work has been exhibited in over one hundred and fifty museums and galleries world wide including the Whitney Museum of American Art, PS 1 MOMA, The Kunsthaus Zurich, Institute of Contemporary Art, London, The Ludwig Museum and the Los Aneles County Museum of Art. Warren studied photography, video, cognitive neuroscience, medicine and architecture. His international awards include the AHRB/ACE Arts and Research Fellowship, UK, 2004, Madrid Abierto Public Sculpture Award, 2004, Vilem Flusser Theory Award, Transmediale, Berlin, 2010, Fulbright Scholarship, 2011 and 2013. He is Professor of Art at Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee and Founding Director of the Saas Fee Summer Institute of Art.

Ben van Berkel studied architecture at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, and at the Architectural Association in London, receiving the AA Diploma with Honours in 1987.

With UNStudio, van Berkel has built several projects, including the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, a LED media façade (designed with Rogier van der Heide) and interior renovation for the Galleria Department store in Seoul, Korea, and a private villa in up-state New York. Current projects are the restructuring of the station area of Arnhem, a masterplan for Basauri, Spain, the Dance Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia and the design and restructuring of the Harbor Ponte Parodi in Genoa.

In 1988 he and his wife, Caroline Bos, set up an architectural practice in Amsterdam named Van Berkel & Bos Architectuurbureau, which realized, amongst others projects, the Karbouw office building, the Erasmus Bridgein Rotterdam.

Ben van Berkel has lectured and taught at many architectural schools around the world. He has led Diploma Units at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam (1992-1993) and the Architectural Association in London (1999). Before he became Professor Conceptual Design at the Städelschule in Frankfurt in 2001, he was Visiting Professor at Columbia University, Princeton University and Harvard University. In 2011 Ben van Berkel was appointed the Kenzo Tange Chair at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Central to his teaching is the inclusive approach of architectural works integrating virtual and material organisation and engineering constructions.

Ben van Berkel received many personal awards and affiliations such as the Eileen Gray Award (1983); the British Council Fellowship (1986); the Charlotte Köhler Award (1991); Member of Honor of the Bund Deutscher Architekten (1997); the 1822-Kunstpreis 2003 (Mercedes-Benz Museum, Stuttgart) (2003); the Charles Jencks Award (2007); and the Honorary Fellowship AIA (2013).

In 1998, van Berkel and Bos relaunched their practice as UNStudio, the UN standing for “United Net”. UNStudio presents itself as a network of specialists in architecture, urban development and infrastructure.

In 2009 New Amsterdam Pavilion in Battery Park in Manhattan was revealed. The pavilion was presented to the city of New York by the Dutch government to celebrate 400 years of relations between New York and the Netherlands.

Barcelona, September 16th – 17th 2016

Next September 16th and 17th Saskia Sassen, Carlo Ratti, Philippe Rahm, Janet Sanz Cid, Areti Markopoulou and Tomás Diez are among the speakers who will meet inBarcelona to discuss Advanced Urbanism at the ‪Responsive Cities‬ ‪Symposium.

The Symposium is one of the main activities carried out under the Knowledge Alliance for Advanced Urbanism – KAAU EU co-funded project. KAAU is seeking to promote the innovative education and training that emerging technologies require, developing courses, symposiums and an educational and training platform.

SYMPOSIUM

Over the last decades a new generation of cities and new city-planning paradigms have emerged. Urban development leaders and governments throughout the world have begun to consider innovative systems, driven by information and communication technologies, to be critical drivers with which to face today’s urban challenges.

The Information Age is now giving way to an Experience Age, characterized by high levels of physical interaction and emotional involvement. In this context, the Responsive Cities Symposium claims a renewed active role for architects: the objective is to go beyond the limitations of the “Smart City” vision, investigating “Advanced Urbanism”, intended as the practice of designing and planning receptive and reactive spaces, rather than the mere application of technological systems.

Such a vision requires to rethink our design tools and planning processes, as well as the invitation to revise the educational models surrounding urban sciences.

Attendance is free of charge, but places are limited, so registration is required.

Wolf D. Prix Closing Lecture

Wolf D. Prix is co-founder, Design Principal and CEO of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU. He studied architecture at the Vienna University of Technology, the Architectural Association of London as well as at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles. Amongst others, Wolf D. Prix is a member of the Österreichische Bundeskammer der Architekten und Ingenieurkonsulenten, the Bund Deutscher Architekten, Germany (BDA), the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the Architectural Association Santa Clara, Cuba, and Fellow of the American Institute of Architecture (FAIA).

Wolf D. Prix received numerous awards including the Great Austrian State Award and the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art. He is permanent member of the Austrian Art Senate and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts as well as chairman of the Curia for Art since autumn 2014. Two Universities have conferred him the Doctorate Honoris Causa: The Universidad de Palermo, Buenos Aires, Argentina (2001) and the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism, Bucharest, Romania (2014). In 2015 he was awarded an Honorary Diploma of the Architectural Association of London. Wolf D. Prix is counted among the originators of the deconstructivist architecture movement. COOP HIMMELB(L)AU had its international breakthrough with the invitation to the exhibition Deconstructivist Architecture at MoMA New York in 1988. Over the years Wolf D. Prix/ COOP HIMMELB(L)AU was awarded with numerous international architecture awards.

COOP HIMMELB(L)AU was founded in Vienna in 1968 and has since then been operating under the direction of CEO and design principal Wolf D. Prix in the fields of art, architecture, urban planning, and design. Another branch of the firm was opened in the United States in 1988 in Los Angeles. COOP HIMMELB(L)AU currently employs between 50 and 150 people from 19 different countries. In numerous countries the team has realized museums, concert halls, science and office buildings as well as residential buildings. Presently COOP HIMMELB(L)AU is working on various projects in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Winy Maas MVRDV/The Why Factory

Winy Maas is an architect, urban designer and landscape architect and one of the co-founding directors of the globally operating architecture and urban planning firm MVRDV, based in Rotterdam, Netherlands, known for projects such as the Expo 2000, the vision for greater Paris, Grand Paris Plus Petit, and more recently the Market Hall in Rotterdam.

Maas is professor at and director of The Why Factory, a research institute for the future city, he founded in 2008 at TU Delft. He is currently Visiting Professor at IIT Chicago and the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium and has been at the University of Hong Kong, ETH Zurich, Berlage Institute, MIT, Ohio State and Yale University. In addition he designs stage sets, objects and was curator of Indesem 2007. He curates exhibitions, lectures throughout the world and takes part in international juries. With both MVRDV and The Why Factory he has published a series of research projects.

Michel Gondry (born 8 May 1963) is a French film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is noted for his inventive visual style and distinctive manipulation of mise en scène. He won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay as one of the writers of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), which is often ranked one of the greatest films of the 2000s.

His other films include the surrealistic science fantasy comedy The Science of Sleep (2006), the comedy-drama Be Kind Rewind (2008), the superhero action comedy The Green Hornet (2011), the drama The We and the I (2012), and the romantic drama Mood Indigo (2013).

He is well known for his music video collaborations with The Chemical Brothers, Björk and The White Stripes.
