IAAC Lecture Series – Joan Busquets

Lecture Barcelona: Strategic Plans and/or Key Urban Projects? by Joan Busquets at IAAC Lecture Series

Joan Busquets, the first Martin Bucksbaum Professor in Practice of Urban Planning and Design at Harvard GSD, is a globally recognized urban planner, designer, and architect. Formerly Chair-Professor of Town Planning at the Polytechnic University of Barcelona (1979-2002), he also served as Head of Urban Planning for the Barcelona City Council during the transformative 1980s, playing a pivotal role in the city’s Olympic redevelopment.

A founding member of the Laboratorio de Urbanismo de Barcelona (LUB), Busquets’ pioneering research on squatter settlements earned him the Spanish National Award for Town Planning in 1981 and again in 1985 for his masterplan for Lleida. His urban strategies for cities like Toledo and Alghero, as well as his numerous international projects spanning Europe, Asia, and the Americas, have shaped contemporary urbanism.

His academic research explores diverse urban design strategies, the potential of urban grids, and the transformative impact of Expos on city development. Busquets has authored significant works such as Barcelona: The Urban Evolution of a Compact City, Urban Grids, and Cities X Lines. His professional firms, BAU and BLAU, based in Barcelona, continue to deliver groundbreaking architectural and urban projects worldwide.

About the Speakers Jacinto Seguí and Andrés Mitnik

Jacinto Seguí is the Director of Collaborative Developments at Finsa, a leading company in the industrial transformation of wood. With a focus on sustainable innovation, Seguí brings extensive experience in developing collaborative processes to tackle industrialization, digitalization, and decarbonization in the construction industry. His work aligns with Finsa’s mission to make construction more efficient and sustainable by incorporating wood as a key material in reducing environmental impact throughout the value chain.

Andrés Mitnik is the CEO of Strong by Form, an innovative company revolutionizing lightweight structural solutions by merging the sustainability of wood with the high performance and efficiency of advanced composites. An environmental engineer and economist, Mitnik holds a master’s degree from Harvard and another in Urban Planning from New York University. With extensive international experience in strategic consulting in New York and scaling global startups, his career reflects a deep passion for technology and sustainability. This passion has driven his work across every continent except Antarctica.

Lecture Description

Wood is an extraordinary material: lightweight, strong, and with an environmental impact that is only a fraction of that of steel, concrete, or aluminum. However, for it to truly play a key role in the fight against climate change, we must use it more efficiently and adapt it to transform industries where it is not yet a viable option.

At Strong by Form, we have revolutionized wood by applying the logic of advanced composite materials, combining material science, structural optimization, and digital fabrication, all driven by an essential dose of creativity.

At Finsa, we tackle the major challenges of industrialization, digitalization, and decarbonization in construction, with the ultimate goal of making the construction industry more sustainable. Wood is an exceptional material that acts as a lever to decarbonize the entire value chain—from manufacturing and construction to the maintenance of real estate assets—making them more efficient and sustainable.

MiróMatisse. Más allá de las imágenes

Nueva exposicion temporal MiroMatisse en la Fundació Joan Miró

«Más allá de las imágenes», en primer lugar, porque en esta exposición se cuestionarán clichés. Y es que, a primera vista, la aproximación entre ambos artistas puede antojarse paradójica. Pertenecen a dos generaciones diferentes (Matisse nació en 1869, y Miró, en 1893). Por lo general, son asociados a entornos artísticos diferentes (el fauvismo en el caso de Matisse y el surrealismo en el de Miró) y a planteamientos estéticos también diferentes (la armonía «decorativa» en el caso de Matisse y la extrañeza inquietante en el de Miró). No obstante, la exposición tendrá como objetivo mostrar las relaciones profundas, duraderas y constructivas entre ambos artistas, sus concepciones del arte y sus obras.

MiróMatisse «Más allá de las imágenes», también, porque ambos artistas basaron su creación en una profunda crítica de la tradición de las imágenes en Occidente. Su amplia concepción de las prácticas de la pintura y el dibujo estaba impulsada por esa inquietud crítica. Por ello se profesaban ese reconocimiento y esa admiración mutuos.

La exposición partirá de una base biográfica. ¿Cómo accedieron Matisse y Miró a la obra del otro? ¿Qué vieron o pudieron ver uno en otro? ¿Cuáles fueron las personas que facilitaron ese contacto?
A partir de aquí, la exposición se centrará en momentos decisivos en los que esas miradas cruzadas fueron particularmente productivas: el pensamiento del fauvismo en Miró, a finales de la década de 1910 y principios de la de 1940, y el estímulo que las obras de Miró transmitieron a Matisse, a partir de mediados de los años treinta.

Por último, el interés se centrará en las prácticas compartidas, comparando el asesinato de la pintura con la estética decorativa: los libros ilustrados, las grandes composiciones monumentales y, en última instancia, una «confrontación» final entre grandes obras, con valor de legado, de cada uno de los artistas.

Nader Tehrani IAAC Lecture Series

IAAC Opening Lecture for the Academic Year 24/25 – Nader Tehrani

Nader Tehrani is the founding principal of NADAAA, an interdisciplinary practice with a body of work in infrastructure, urbanism, architecture, and installations. For his contributions to architecture as an art, Tehrani is the recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize, the highest form of recognition of artistic merit in the United States. He is also the recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Design, and the Design Visionary by Cooper Hewitt and the Smithsonian Museum of Design National Design awards. Tehrani is also the former Dean of The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union. The works of Nader Tehrani have been widely exhibited at MOMA, LA MOCA and ICA Boston.

Based in Boston NADAAA has evolved over three decades as a multi-disciplinary practice dedicated to bridging design disciplines; from landscape to urbanism, architecture to interiors, and industrial design to furniture. With an eye towards integrated thinking, we enter the discourse on technology, aesthetics and building protocols as part of a holistic process, Rather than focus on typology NADAAA’s portfolio is built on process, with examples of institutional, academic, housing, commercial, retail and civic projects.

Fourteen years walking together

Fourteen years ago, we embarked upon a passionate adventure; Barcelona Architecture Walks! Today we want to tell you how it all started.

This is a story about a a couple of architects from Barcelona, Elodie Grammont and Miguel Angel Borras who inspired by Eoghan Lewis, an architect that gave architecture tours in Sidney, realized that Barcelona could benefit from the same approach, so they decided to found BAW Barcelona Architecture Walks.

At the beginning they designed a route focused on the Santa Caterina Market, the most recent work of architect Enric Miralles, someone for whom they felt a great admiration. After a period of time they realized they needed to increase the number of routes they offered to reach a larger public. Barcelona Architecture Walks wanted to invite those visitors that wanted to learn something and discover the magic of Barcelona; that is how they fell under the charm of the city’s most idolized architect, Antoni Gaudi.

They were looking for a genuine expedition through the magial universe of “Modernismo”: offering a point of view that set itself apart from the more commercial tours. Later on another tour was added, one which explains the ins and outs of the “Eixample” or gridded area of Barcelona and how it fits into the city’s urban plan; another tour focuses on the 22@ area, an emerging technological neighborhood and the last tour explains the history of the city from its pre-Roman origins to the new skyline. It is through these different tours that Barcelona Architecture Walks gives visitors a comprehensive view of the city from its early history to its present state, a unique urban plan and fascinating architecture.

To do this Elodie and Miguel Angel have surrounded themselves with a great team of architects including Guille Genestar, Rafael Gómez, Ricard Pons, Carmen Popescu, Jaume Prat, Jelena Prokopljevic, Daniela Sanchez, Tomas Gonzalez, Cristina Santamaría, Pia Wortham; all of whom have a broad professional trajectory involving teaching, and dissemination of architecture. They are guides that transmit the passion and effort that has gone into the design of each of our tours while giving each tour experience a personal touch.

Today, fourteen years ago we will like by thanking all of you who have chosen to visit Barcelona to discover our city by walking with the BAW, as well as our collaborators that were part of this project from the beginning; Joan Vitoria and Jordi Garet from Globus Vermell, Carola Vega, Martina Corona y Pia Callis. Thanks to our present team of architects and virtual communicators Mavi Hita and Jaume Subirats, thanks to Joana Casals for the graphic design and to our friends and family because without their support and vote of confidence none of this would have been possible.

Urban resilience walking tours

Today we would like to share some updates with you. This season we are offering tours that focus on different areas of the city that showcase strategies Barcelona is implementing for urban resilience. Among the objectives are a greener city, and the capacity to integrate multicultural complexity into our urban fabric in a way that is respectful and sustainable.

These routes will take the walker through different projects that has implemented the urban resilience, public spaces, green zones, and “superblocks”. We will discuss what the difficulties and challenges of each project are in reaching a common goal of increasing space for public interactions and to reinforce the social fabric of each neighborhood.

The BARCELONA & THE FUTURE tour takes the walker through the POBLE NOU district, where the first superblock was introduced several years ago. We visit the area surrounding the Glories Plaza that has both projects that are complete like the Gran Clariana, and the park, still under construction, that will become a new central meeting point for Barcelona.

The BARCELONA & URBANISM tour takes you to the area surrounding the SANT ANTONI MARKET, where we can see the second superblock in Barcelona and how it was integrated into the market renovation in one of the densest neighborhoods in the city.

Our BARCELONA & LANDSCAPE special tour takes the walker through different green spaces in the city with a focus on PASEO SAN JOAN. A beautiful project that converted one of the most important avenues of the city using landscape design. A street that had been neglected over the years has been transformed into a neighborhood community space that integrates cars, pedestrians, public space, leisure areas, and areas for play.

48H Open House Barcelona 2024

Durante el 26 y 27 de Octubre tendrá lugar el 48h Open House Barcelona, el festival de arquitectura más importante del ámbito metropolitano de Barcelona abre las puertas de más de 200 edificios para promover una doble reflexión alrededor de qué es importante en la arquitectura y qué le da valor.

Esta 15ª edición del festival pretende excavar y entender lo que es importante para el habitante de la ciudad. Bajo el lema ¿CÓMO QUIERES VIVIR? el evento se centrará en la exploración de siete características fundamentales en el momento de diseñar y de disfrutar de un espacio: luminosidad, solidez, ubicación, orientación, funcionalidad, belleza, confort.

Queremos que las personas se pregunten cómo quieren vivir y qué es importante para ellas en un espacio. Creemos que hace falta resaltar los valores de la arquitectura y hacerlos tangibles para ser capaces de entender y reclamar una arquitectura apropiada para todas las personas.

Además de las secciones y concursos de cada año, en el 2024 vuelven Open Petits y Open Kitchen. Open Petits recoge actividades para los menores de 12 años en diferentes espacios de las ciudades: por un lado, reúne visitas interesantes para los menores por el tipo de contenido y, por otro, los pequeños podrán encontrar un juego especial que consta de descubrir pequeñas casas que estarán escondidas en 10 espacios diferentes de las ciudades. Y Open Kitchen profundiza en la relación entre arquitectura y cocina, y entre arquitectura y percepción sensorial de la comida. En esta sección, se resaltan espacios en los que las visitas guiadas las realizan cocineros o responsables de cocina y se destaca el aspecto gastronómico de la arquitectura.

Como el año pasado, el festival se une a la celebración de la 19ª edición de la Barcelona Design Week y su iniciativa global de impulsar el objetivo ODS número 18 que trata el diseño como un elemento clave para el presente y el futuro de las personas. Por eso, el festival ha nombrado la nueva sede de la red global LCI Education en Barcelona, en Poblenou, como el EDIFICIO 18, con la idea de resaltar los valores y la importancia del diseño de este proyecto.

Por otra parte, desde este 2024, el festival de arquitectura 48h Open House BCN forma parte del Open House Europe, un proyecto cofinanciado por el programa Europa Creativa de la Comissió Europea. Open House Europe es un proyecto de cooperación que conecta 14 diferentes organizadores de festivales Open House por Europa y permite la colaboración y el intercambio de conocimiento. Esta interconexión de organizaciones expone al público a diferentes ideas arquitectónicas que han dado forma y continúan dando forma a la arquitectura en Europa.

Barcelona Design Week 2024

The Barcelona Design Week 2024 (BDW), created by Barcelona Design Centre in 2006, is the annual event on design and creativity in Barcelona. The BDW is a member of the World Design Weeks network, whose headquarters are in Barcelona. The network consists of more than 40 design festivals around the world in design and creativity fields. The main venue for the BDW is the Design Hub Barcelona.

The Barcelona Design Week, which will celebrate its 19th edition from October 16th to 26th, returns with the theme Design for Human Future focusing on water.

Barcelona, a city facing an unprecedented water scarcity emergency, becomes the perfect setting for reflection to explore how design can contribute to accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the construction of a future in balance between the planet and human beings.

The Barcelona Design Week 2024 will be an opportunity to inspire, educate, and mobilize the local and global community, showing how design and creativity, applied with awareness, can be a powerful tool to address the critical challenge of water management and conservation.

The Design for Human Future Conference, on October 17th and 18th, will tackle the water scarcity problem through talks and round tables, and will present innovative cases and design proposals to improve the situation. The conference will include a Next Gen Design workshop on Circular Economy and 2 Talks.

Other activities such as the ROCA One Day Design Challenge addressed to young designers or the Next Gen Design urban installation to sensibilize the citizens will be part of the What if… water movement.

Five years journey of BIG Barcelona

BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group is a Copenhagen, New York, London, Barcelona, Shenzhen, Zurich, Los Angeles, and Oslo-based group of architects, designers, urbanists, landscape professionals, interior and product designers.

Led by Bjarke Ingels, the studio is currently involved in projects throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East. BIG’s architecture emerges out of a careful analysis of how contemporary life constantly evolves and changes. BIG believes that by hitting the fertile overlap between pragmatism and utopia, architects can find the freedom to change the surface of our planet, to better fit contemporary life forms.

BIG has been based in Barcelona since 2019, with focus on Southern Europe, South America and Africa.

This exhibition showcases a sample about their Barcelona’s projects in design, under construction and built within the first five years of BIG’s southern European office.

The exhibition will be available from Thursday 10th October, from 10am to 8pm until Sunday 13th from 10am to 3pm

Goodbye to Miguel Milá

Designing is seeing life through a magnifying glass. Goodbye to Miguel Milá.

Miguel Milá (Barcelona, 1931), a pioneer of design in our country, and author of emblematic pieces such as the TMC and TMM lamps or the Cesta lamp, died last August at the age of 93, in Bilbao. With more than seven decades dedicated to the profession, Milá was an icon of Spanish design and its modernity.

He has been posthumously honoured with the Gold Medal of the City of Barcelona, Milá was the first winner of the National Design Award (1987) and Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts (2016), or Compasso d’Oro Internazionale in 2008, Milá was born into a family of the upper bourgeoisie of Barcelona related to artistic circles: his brother Leopoldo was also a well-known representative of industrial design in our country and his uncle Pedro Milá Camps was the one who commissioned Antoni Gaudí to build the famous Casa Milá, known as La Pedrera.

His works are characterized by showing rigorous functionality, always guided by the same idea «design that is not useful, tires and, in addition, ends up being ugly». His work made a virtue of its initial context, marked by scarcity, going through different stages that went from his work as an interior designer to his achievements as an editor and his participation in different companies.

In 1960, Milá was one of the founders of the industrial design section of the Foment de les Arts Decoratives (Adi-Fad) together with names such as André Ricard, Antonio de Moragas, Oriol Bohigas or Rafael Marquina. His career has been associated since the 1980s with the firm Santa & Cole, which still keeps the lamps in its catalogue.

The Museu del Disseny de Barcelona houses the Miguel Milá Collection, which contains more than 2,000 documents (plans, photographic material, models and sketches) for many of the interior design and product design projects carried out by Milá throughout his life.

Manifesta 15

From the 8th of September to the 24th of November 2024, Manifesta 15, the European Nomadic Biennial, comes to the metropolitan region of Barcelona for its 15th edition.

Through artistic interventions in prominent historical venues and industrial sites never before opened to the public, Manifesta 15 seeks to decentralise the cultural infrastructure of Barcelona and its surrounding cities.

About

Manifesta 15 aims to reshape the relations between art, culture and society by investigating and catalysing socio-ecological change. All whilst being in continuous dialogue with both local communities and international cultural producers.

Due to its nomadic nature, each edition finds itself in a new locality every two years because it is invited by a Host City. In Manifesta 15’s case, the Bid was written by the Barcelona City Council and supported by 11 cities in the metropolitan region: Badalona, Cornellà de Llobregat, El Prat de Llobregat, Granollers, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Mataró, Sabadell, Sant Adrià de Besòs, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Sant Cugat del Vallès and Terrassa.

Casa Gomis is a Modernist villa designed by Antoni Bonet Castellana for Ricardo Gomis Serdañons and his wife Inés Bertrand Mata located next to a lagoon called La Ricarda. Built between 1949 and 1963, the residential property has a storied past and an uncertain future. While it was still functioning as a private home, it doubled as an alternative cultural centre. Casa Gomis sits in the Llobregat Delta Nature Reserve, which borders the Barcelona-El Prat Airport, aligning perfectly with the cluster theme of Balancing Conflicts. During Manifesta 15, it will be a home for artistic perspectives on sustainability and modernisation.

Towards Manifesta 15

There are many reasons that explain why Manifesta was invited to help to incubate change in the region. In the past years, numerous factors have impacted the urban development of Barcelona. These include: the fast gentrification of the coastline and natural areas, the use of land for real estate development, the introduction of the Super Block model and the use of land for industrial transformation. City expansion is limited due to the natural barriers of the rivers, the sea and the mountains. However, rural and/or protected land are at risk because of the expansion of economic developments.

The Bid for Manifesta in Barcelona was also driven by the city’s commitment to cultural decentralisation. Manifesta 15 Barcelona Metropolitana aims to build new ways for social and artistic communities to connect with local infrastructures. It seeks to shift cultural attention to the city’s outskirts and neighbouring areas, fostering collaboration between the metropolitan cities. Manifesta, known for its nomadic nature, emphasises creating site-specific structures that focus on local voices and memories, supported by extensive research in host cities two years prior to the biennial.

Join us for a 12-week programme featuring projects, interventions, events and talks across 12 cities, with more than 90 local and international participants.

Now that Summer has end, we want to share with all of you, some amazing images of the Summer’24 tours.

We are very proud because many travellers have been walking with us on these weeks and have enjoyed Barcelona through our Walking Tours… As you know our aim is to present the essence of Barcelona to the larger public, so it has been a pleasure to walk with you and let you immerse with our Summer tours, in a city that will not leave you indifferent.

Our walking tours for this 2024/2025 season

We have our usual five regular weekly tours where you get to meet fellow walkers from all over the globe. You can also reserve private tours of these same routes to better fit your schedule with one of our guides dedicated exclusively to your group or family.

On top of our regular tours we also offer five special tours with routes designed for those who want to explore more specific topics like Barcelona and landscape or Barcelona and RCR, the Spanish Pritzker Prize winners from 2017, or even a more in depth look at one of our regular tours, Modernismo XL, for example.

We have also recently resumed our offer on the BARCELONA & BOFILL tour. This tour takes you to see early Bofill apartment blocks in Barcelona and Sant Just as well as a visit to “La Fabrica”, the emblematic building that houses his architecture studio. Similar to our other special tours you must reserve via email and specify your needs because these visits are limited in terms of dates and number of people.

As always each route is driven by a set of themes and concepts that decode the city whilst stimulating new ways of thinking about and seeing Barcelona.
