Iaac Winter Lecture Series: Lucy Bullivant
From Masterplanning to Adaptive Planning
The masterplan has been the 20th century’s chief tool for simple area/ratio-based parcelling up of land, a purely top-down, rigid division of space. Nowadays while many cities are concerned with future proofing their existences by committing to long term, city-wide plans under time-sensitive banners such as ‘2030’ or ‘2050’ and smart city slogans, the combined impacts of economic and ecological crisis urgently demand that urban designers understand ecosystems in a more complex way and potential ways to respond to them without recourse to either the purely top-down aspirations of the past or the present.
