Pantalla Pavelló | Architecture in the Family: The Mies van der Rohes by Sabine Gisiger
With summer comes Pantalla Pavelló, the al fresco cinema cycle at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion that turns the travertine wall into a big screen. A different cinema accompanied by a presentation and a space for conversation to contextualize each of the films.
This year’s cycle, under the title Architecture in the Family, brings us three films that bring us closer to the family relationships of renowned architects, with a strong and unique personality that inspire their sons and daughters to follow in their creative footsteps. We see how this confronts them with the dual desire to be like the father and to be both critical and independent from him. All three films build the story through buildings, letters and memories, revealing characters and conflicts that speak of universal feelings.
1st July the first film in the series, presented by the director herself, is The Mies van der Rohes by Sabine Gisige: an exciting family story that creates a moral portrait of the modern age through the women around the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe – his wife Ada, his three daughters Georgia, Marianne and Waltraut, and his partner Lilly Reich. When Mies emigrates to the USA in 1938, they fight on their own through the barbarism of the Nazi era and the war. Their lives continue marked by the legacy of their absent husband, father and lover. This is how the eldest daughter, Georgia van der Rohe, explains it with films, images and private documents, unpublished and forgotten.
