BEN FLANNER
Ben Flanner is the head farmer, CEO, and co-founder of Brooklyn Grange rooftop Farm, based in New York City. A pioneering urban farm operation, the business produces vegetables, herbs, and honey on 2 ½ acres of intensive green roofs, and sells its produce to the community through various channels. Brooklyn Grange is internationally recognized as the leader in rooftop agriculture and as an exceptional green and community-minded business. The farm offers organic farm training programs, and engages with numerous universities, and colleges. The farm also hosts workshops, events, dinners, and even weddings. Prior to founding the Brooklyn Grange, Flanner, who was born in Milwaukee, WI, co-founded and managed the Eagle Street Rooftop farm in 2009, the world’s first green roof farm. He has a BS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, and a background in management consulting and marketing, prior to farming.
Ben has presented to audiences including NYU Stern Business School, Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA), Slow Money, the Garrison Institute’s highly political “Climate, Mind, and Behavior” annual conference, the Municipal Art Society, numerous Northeastern Horticultural Societies, and has been a guest on dozens of panels and university classes. He has taught urban agriculture courses in New York City, Toronto, and Chicago, and the senior capstone course in the Environmental Studies department at New York University (NYU).
Since its launch in 2010, Brooklyn Grange has received the LICBDC Green Business Award, the Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Award of Excellence in 2011, and Queens Community Business Award from Mayor Bloomberg’s office in 2012, and the Queens Local Food Hero award in 2011 and 2012. The farm was the single largest recipient of the Department of Environmental Protection’s 2011 Green Infrastructure grant in Stormwater Management and has been featured in the New Yorker, the New York Times, Crains, CNBC. The farm also hosted a visit and tour to New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the summer of 2012.

ECOLOGIC STUDIO
Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto are co-founders of ecoLogicStudio an architectural and urban design studio involved in digital design and architecture research for the definition of a new ecology of space and behavior.
Located in the east of London the studio has built up an international reputation for its innovative work on systemic design, a method defined by the combination and integration of systemic thinking, computational design, bio-hacking and digital prototyping. This broadened approach to design – ranging from the micro to the macro and from nanotechnologies to urban networks – is embodied into an experimental practice, where projects and installations become laboratories of interactions. Locally activated design protocols synthesize a form of expanded hyper-reality hacking larger organizational systems.

Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto are active academics; they have been unit master at the Architectural Association in London, and are currently studio directors at the IAAC in Barcelona, as well as visiting critics at Cornell University.

Claudia is leader of the MArch in Urban Morphogenesis at Bartlett UCL and, with Marco, co-director of the BIO-UD Research Cluster at UCL Bartlett in London.
Their projects have been published and exhibited throughout the world, in particular in Venice Architecture Biennale (ecoMachines, 2008; The efData Grotto, 2010); Seville (STEMcloud, 2008), Istanbul (Fibrous Room, 2008), Milan (Aqva Garden, 2007), London (HORTUS 2012), in Paris (HORTUS.Paris 2013), in Orleans (Meta-folly 2013). Their latest research has been published in 2012 by Routledge in a book titled “Systemic Architecture”.

48H OPEN HOUSE BARCELONA (19-20 Octubre 2013)

És la principal cita de la ciutat de Barcelona amb l’arquitectura, un cap de setmana al mes d’Octubre de portes obertes a més de 150 edificis de tot tipus, forma i mida. Una iniciativa de l’associació Open House Barcelona.

‘Open House’ ofereix l’oportunitat d’experimentar l’arquitectura de forma excepcional i completament de franc. Les activitats de l’Open House conviden a tothom a explorar i entendre el valor d’un espai ben construït i dissenyat. Aquest esdeveniment, va començar a London l’any 1992, i des de a les hores ‘Open House’ s’està introduint arreu del món: New York, Dublin, Galway, Tel Aviv i ara Barcelona.

48H OPEN HOUSE BCN, un projecte obert a tothom i sense ànim de lucre que va començar a Barcelona l’any 2010. Una iniciativa transversal, adreçada especialment als barcelonins, que implica la participació de diferents agents socials, tècnics i artístics per “obrir la bona arquitectura a la ciutat”. L’Objectiu és fer-los viure l’arquitectura i la ciutat, donant-los l’oportunitat de remirar-la.

Els arquitectes que han dissenyat l’obra, els usuaris, o els encarregats de la planificació d’una zona de la ciutat són els mediadors que els ajuden a fer entendre què és l’arquitectura, suggerint-los itineraris, i proposant-los activitats i conferències completament gratuïtes.

25.000 vistes el primer any i 35.000 el segon any, demostren un nivell d’interès en creixement per l’arquitectura i l’urbanisme dels nostres ciutadans. Ha estat una iniciativa valorada i participada per diferents sectors: 600 persones voluntàries, 22 entitats col·laboradores, i més de 100 propietaris públics i privats. La implicació de més de 100 arquitectes ha estat fonamental per aconseguir un intercanvi cultural entre visitants, usuaris i autors.

Jueves 25 DE JULIO MESA REDONDA E INAUGURACIÓN EXPOSICIÓN TFG ESARQ. 19h en el DHUB Barcelona.

En el marco de la exposición de TFG (Trabajos Final de Grado” de la promoción 2012-13 ESARQ-UIC, “Diagonal Verde Bcn. Redefiniendo Barcelona con una segunda Diagonal”, que se inaugura el próximo 25 de julio, se celebra una mesa redonda en la que se reflexionará sobre la Barcelona del futuro, a partir de los trabajos de final de grado de los estudiantes de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de la Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (ESARQ-UIC) y la University of Virginia.

La mesa redonda pretende analizar cómo un concepto cambia las reglas de juego de un lugar que aún no existe, profundizando en el papel que juega la arquitectura en relación con la construcción de la ciudad.

La DIAGONAL VERDA es un concepto que parte del futuro Parc del Camí Comtal, tomando consciencia de su gran escala y geometría respecto a la ciudad y lo prolonga aprovechando los vacios y espacios verdes existentes como el Parc de la Ciutadella, para construir un gran eje verde que atraviesa completamente la ciudad y conecta la montaña de Collserola con el mar.

Esta idea aporta una nueva manera de entender Barcelona estructurándola a partir de la gran X generada por el cruce con el otro gran eje cívico, la Diagonal.

Lecture EMBT PROJECTS

Benedetta Tagliabue was born in Milan, Italy. In 1963 she graduated in Venice from the “Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia” in Italy.

Presently Benedetta Tagliabue teaches at the University of Architecture ETSAB (Escola Técnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona) in Barcelona and lectures regularly in architectural forums. In 2004 she received an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Napier University and she is a member of The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.

Tagliabue began her collaboration with Enric Miralles in 1991, with whom she founded the studio Miralles Tagliabue EMBT. Together their work includes iconic buildings and public spaces in Barcelona such as the Gas Natural tower, Santa Caterina market, and Diagonal Mar park. Buildings in other European cities include the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, Utrecht’s town council, and a music school in Hamburg. Under Tagliabue’s direction, the studio currently works not only within the scope of architecture, but also within that of landscape, public space, building restoration, temporary installations, and design.

32 cartas: 24 con preguntas y 12 con comodines. Los 12 comodines se reparten en: 3 comodines del público, 3 comodines de llamada, 3 comodines de cambio de sentido, 3 comodines de elijo quien responda por mi (cualquiera presente en la sala excepto el crupier)

El juego se desarrolla en cuatro rondas. El orden de salida y el asiento en el que se colocará cada uno de los jugadores se elegirá a la carta más alta. El crupier repartirá cartas ocultas a los cuatro jugadores. Estas serán de dos barajas diferentes, cuatro cartas de preguntas y dos cartas de comodines. El crupier dispondrá de cuatro comodines que podrá utilizar en cualquier ronda que considere necesaria. El juego se iniciará “a la carta más baja” y se desarrollará siempre en sentido horario, hasta que se utilice un comodín de cambio de sentido. En cada jugada la carta elegida por el jugador al que toque turno será leída por el crupier en voz alta y deberá ser respondida públicamente en primer lugar por el jugador a la derecha de la mano en ese turno. Si se ha utilizado un comodín de cambio de sentido previamente, el turno corresponderá al sentido del juego de la jugada anterior. Pasada esta primera ronda, el crupier organizará los turnos de palabra posteriores en torno a cada pregunta y podrá interpelar a cualquier jugador en función de las circunstancias del juego. El uso de un comodín implica que su usuario no podrá responder a la pregunta en primera instancia. Sólo podrá utilizar el comodín el jugador preguntado en primer lugar en cada jugada. Los turnos serán consecutivos de jugador en jugador. El juego acabará con el uso de la última carta de preguntas que se haya repartido. Hagan juego!

Lecture “Naturalizing Architecture”

Since 1996, Marie-Ange Brayer has been director of the Centre Regional Contemporary Art Collection [FRAC, Centre] in Orléans, France, where the collection is channelled towards the linkage between art and research architecture. The FRAC Centre has been putting together a collection to do with architecture in its utopian and experimental dimension, from the 1950s up until the present day. In 1999 she founded with Frédéric Migayrou the Orléans International Architectural Conference, ArchiLab, which brings together younger international practitioners involved in the latest forms of architecture.
In 2002, M.-A. Brayer was appointed with Béatrice Simonot as curator of the French Pavilion of the Venice Biennale of Architecture’s 8th International Exhibition of Architecture. In 2008, she was associate curator of the 3rd International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Seville (BIAC) for the “Youniverse” exhibition, with Peter Weibel as general curator. In 2013, she will curate ArchiLab « Naturalizing the architecture » with Frederic Migayrou. Art and architecture critic, Marie-Ange Brayer has published numerous articles in her domain in magazines and catalogs .She is currently working on a doctorate treating the architectural model since the Renaissance by tracing the history of its representation at the EHESS (School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences) in Paris.

Lecture: Material Computation in Architecture

 Computation, in its most basic meaning, refers to the processing of information. In this way, both machinic processes operating in the binary realm of the digital, as well as material processes operating in the complex domain of the physical can be considered computational. The lecture will introduce Achim Menges’ work on exploring the territory where machine computation and material computation potentially overlap, where they not simply co-exist but intensely interact in the design process. He will present the related design research – conducted at the Architectural Association, at Harvard University and at his new institute at the University of Stuttgart University over the last ten years – along a series of constructed prototype buildings. This will include the institute’s latest research pavilion, which was entirely constructed by robotic carbon and glass fibre filament winding processes.

Achim Menges, born 1975, is a registered architect and professor at University of Stuttgart where he is the founding director of the Institute for Computational Design (since 2008).  In addition, he has been Visiting Professor in Architecture at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (2009-10), at the AA School of Architecture in London (2009-current) and at Rice University in Houston (2004). Achim Menges graduated with honours from the AA School of Architecture in London (2002) where he subsequently taught as Studio Master of the Emergent Technologies and Design Graduate Program (2002-09) and as Unit Master of Diploma Unit 4 (2003-06).

Achim Menges practice and research focuses on the development of integral design processes at the intersection of morphogenetic design computation, biomimetic engineering and computer aided manufacturing that enables a highly articulated, performative built environment. His work is based on an interdisciplinary approach in collaboration with structural engineers, computer scientists, material scientists and biologists. Achim Menges has published several books on this work and related fields of design research, and he is the author/coauthor of numerous articles and scientific papers.  His projects and design research has received many international awards, has been published and exhibited worldwide, and form parts of several renowned museum collections.

CONNECTION_ IMPORT TICINO:
“ARCHITECTURE AND TERRITORY”

The _CONNECTION project was born out of the desire to establish a cultural connection between the city of Barcelona and other European cities. A series of architecture exhibitions are the focus of this project, which also offers other events such as conferences and meetings between universities and aims to create synergies between the professional architects involved. Each event, which is called a “connection”, is composed of a first exhibition in Barcelona, followed by a second presentation in the invited country. These architecture exhibitions are entitled “Barcelona_Import” (followed by the name of the invited city or region) and “Barcelona_Export”.

The aim is to create a network of cultural connections between cities as a means of spreading the values of urbanism and architecture. Each new connection will offer a new theme, which will always take into acount the idiosyncrasies and the cultural and architectural background of the invited city or region.

The commissioners will select 20 projects by architects under 50 years of age who represent the contemporary architecture that is being produced in a given territory.

The first set of connections will take place in Switzerland and more particularly in the Ticino, a canton with an important architectural and cultural tradition.

This first exhibition seeks to identify the key under-50 players from Ticino during the 2002-2012 decade. The theme chosen for this first confrontation with Barcelona is “Architecture in the Territory”. The Canton of Ticino is a mainly mountainous territory which nevertheless has many other geographical conformations such as hills and plains, valleys and lakes. More than half of the territory of the canton is uninhabited. The majority of the population lives in the center-south area between Sopraceneri (Magadino, Locarno and Bellinzona) and Sottoceneri (Lugano, Mendrisio and Chiasso).

This particular geography, together with the gradual population increase and the presence of the prevalent type of single-family houses, as well as the difficulty of finding accommodation within the larger centers, has generated a gradual growth of urban expansion known as “urban sprawl”.

From Chiasso to Bellinzona – the capital – via Lugano – the main economic center – we find a single continuous low-density urban agglomeration. The backbone of this diffuse city seems to be the highway that runs through the canton from north to south, connecting Italy and the South of the Alps with the rest of Switzerland and Northern Europe. The Barcelona_Import Ticino exhibition seeks to locate a series of works from this territory that together represent a snapshot of the quality of Ticino architecture from the last decade. The better to represent this relationship between architecture and territory – starting from the south and moving up the canton to the valleys of the far north – we have chosen a series of combinations between works and geographical context:

• architecture in lowland areas

• architecture in the urban context

• architecture in the vicinity of lakes

• architecture in hilly areas

• architecture in mountain areas

The main focus of this exhibition is on residential settlements and public buildings and schools in urban and suburban areas as well as in less populated areas.

The second architecture exhibition will be held at the Accademia di Mendrisio in October 2013. The 20 selected studios from Barcelona will show works of collective housing in which the presence of other typological categories creates new and interesting relationships with the surrounding urban space. In the second part of this catalogue these issues are examined by presenting recent works within the urban fabric of the city of Barcelona.
