BEN FLANNER
Ben Flanner is the head farmer, CEO, and co-founder of Brooklyn Grange rooftop Farm, based in New York City. A pioneering urban farm operation, the business produces vegetables, herbs, and honey on 2 ½ acres of intensive green roofs, and sells its produce to the community through various channels. Brooklyn Grange is internationally recognized as the leader in rooftop agriculture and as an exceptional green and community-minded business. The farm offers organic farm training programs, and engages with numerous universities, and colleges. The farm also hosts workshops, events, dinners, and even weddings. Prior to founding the Brooklyn Grange, Flanner, who was born in Milwaukee, WI, co-founded and managed the Eagle Street Rooftop farm in 2009, the world’s first green roof farm. He has a BS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, and a background in management consulting and marketing, prior to farming.
Ben has presented to audiences including NYU Stern Business School, Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA), Slow Money, the Garrison Institute’s highly political “Climate, Mind, and Behavior” annual conference, the Municipal Art Society, numerous Northeastern Horticultural Societies, and has been a guest on dozens of panels and university classes. He has taught urban agriculture courses in New York City, Toronto, and Chicago, and the senior capstone course in the Environmental Studies department at New York University (NYU).
Since its launch in 2010, Brooklyn Grange has received the LICBDC Green Business Award, the Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Award of Excellence in 2011, and Queens Community Business Award from Mayor Bloomberg’s office in 2012, and the Queens Local Food Hero award in 2011 and 2012. The farm was the single largest recipient of the Department of Environmental Protection’s 2011 Green Infrastructure grant in Stormwater Management and has been featured in the New Yorker, the New York Times, Crains, CNBC. The farm also hosted a visit and tour to New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the summer of 2012.

ECOLOGIC STUDIO
Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto are co-founders of ecoLogicStudio an architectural and urban design studio involved in digital design and architecture research for the definition of a new ecology of space and behavior.
Located in the east of London the studio has built up an international reputation for its innovative work on systemic design, a method defined by the combination and integration of systemic thinking, computational design, bio-hacking and digital prototyping. This broadened approach to design – ranging from the micro to the macro and from nanotechnologies to urban networks – is embodied into an experimental practice, where projects and installations become laboratories of interactions. Locally activated design protocols synthesize a form of expanded hyper-reality hacking larger organizational systems.

Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto are active academics; they have been unit master at the Architectural Association in London, and are currently studio directors at the IAAC in Barcelona, as well as visiting critics at Cornell University.

Claudia is leader of the MArch in Urban Morphogenesis at Bartlett UCL and, with Marco, co-director of the BIO-UD Research Cluster at UCL Bartlett in London.
Their projects have been published and exhibited throughout the world, in particular in Venice Architecture Biennale (ecoMachines, 2008; The efData Grotto, 2010); Seville (STEMcloud, 2008), Istanbul (Fibrous Room, 2008), Milan (Aqva Garden, 2007), London (HORTUS 2012), in Paris (HORTUS.Paris 2013), in Orleans (Meta-folly 2013). Their latest research has been published in 2012 by Routledge in a book titled “Systemic Architecture”.

32 cartas: 24 con preguntas y 12 con comodines. Los 12 comodines se reparten en: 3 comodines del público, 3 comodines de llamada, 3 comodines de cambio de sentido, 3 comodines de elijo quien responda por mi (cualquiera presente en la sala excepto el crupier)

El juego se desarrolla en cuatro rondas. El orden de salida y el asiento en el que se colocará cada uno de los jugadores se elegirá a la carta más alta. El crupier repartirá cartas ocultas a los cuatro jugadores. Estas serán de dos barajas diferentes, cuatro cartas de preguntas y dos cartas de comodines. El crupier dispondrá de cuatro comodines que podrá utilizar en cualquier ronda que considere necesaria. El juego se iniciará “a la carta más baja” y se desarrollará siempre en sentido horario, hasta que se utilice un comodín de cambio de sentido. En cada jugada la carta elegida por el jugador al que toque turno será leída por el crupier en voz alta y deberá ser respondida públicamente en primer lugar por el jugador a la derecha de la mano en ese turno. Si se ha utilizado un comodín de cambio de sentido previamente, el turno corresponderá al sentido del juego de la jugada anterior. Pasada esta primera ronda, el crupier organizará los turnos de palabra posteriores en torno a cada pregunta y podrá interpelar a cualquier jugador en función de las circunstancias del juego. El uso de un comodín implica que su usuario no podrá responder a la pregunta en primera instancia. Sólo podrá utilizar el comodín el jugador preguntado en primer lugar en cada jugada. Los turnos serán consecutivos de jugador en jugador. El juego acabará con el uso de la última carta de preguntas que se haya repartido. Hagan juego!

CONNECTION_ IMPORT TICINO:
“ARCHITECTURE AND TERRITORY”

The _CONNECTION project was born out of the desire to establish a cultural connection between the city of Barcelona and other European cities. A series of architecture exhibitions are the focus of this project, which also offers other events such as conferences and meetings between universities and aims to create synergies between the professional architects involved. Each event, which is called a “connection”, is composed of a first exhibition in Barcelona, followed by a second presentation in the invited country. These architecture exhibitions are entitled “Barcelona_Import” (followed by the name of the invited city or region) and “Barcelona_Export”.

The aim is to create a network of cultural connections between cities as a means of spreading the values of urbanism and architecture. Each new connection will offer a new theme, which will always take into acount the idiosyncrasies and the cultural and architectural background of the invited city or region.

The commissioners will select 20 projects by architects under 50 years of age who represent the contemporary architecture that is being produced in a given territory.

The first set of connections will take place in Switzerland and more particularly in the Ticino, a canton with an important architectural and cultural tradition.

This first exhibition seeks to identify the key under-50 players from Ticino during the 2002-2012 decade. The theme chosen for this first confrontation with Barcelona is “Architecture in the Territory”. The Canton of Ticino is a mainly mountainous territory which nevertheless has many other geographical conformations such as hills and plains, valleys and lakes. More than half of the territory of the canton is uninhabited. The majority of the population lives in the center-south area between Sopraceneri (Magadino, Locarno and Bellinzona) and Sottoceneri (Lugano, Mendrisio and Chiasso).

This particular geography, together with the gradual population increase and the presence of the prevalent type of single-family houses, as well as the difficulty of finding accommodation within the larger centers, has generated a gradual growth of urban expansion known as “urban sprawl”.

From Chiasso to Bellinzona – the capital – via Lugano – the main economic center – we find a single continuous low-density urban agglomeration. The backbone of this diffuse city seems to be the highway that runs through the canton from north to south, connecting Italy and the South of the Alps with the rest of Switzerland and Northern Europe. The Barcelona_Import Ticino exhibition seeks to locate a series of works from this territory that together represent a snapshot of the quality of Ticino architecture from the last decade. The better to represent this relationship between architecture and territory – starting from the south and moving up the canton to the valleys of the far north – we have chosen a series of combinations between works and geographical context:

• architecture in lowland areas

• architecture in the urban context

• architecture in the vicinity of lakes

• architecture in hilly areas

• architecture in mountain areas

The main focus of this exhibition is on residential settlements and public buildings and schools in urban and suburban areas as well as in less populated areas.

The second architecture exhibition will be held at the Accademia di Mendrisio in October 2013. The 20 selected studios from Barcelona will show works of collective housing in which the presence of other typological categories creates new and interesting relationships with the surrounding urban space. In the second part of this catalogue these issues are examined by presenting recent works within the urban fabric of the city of Barcelona.

Los arquitectos Ivo Barão y Peter Hutter participan en los FOROS ESARQ 2013 con la conferencia titulada “Un libro y cinco proyectos”, en la que reflexionarán acerca de la influencia que el entorno de trabajo, la estrategia y la metodología ejercen sobre los proyectos de una joven oficina de arquitectura.

Barão-Hutter muestran una selección personal de su obra: Un libro y cinco proyectos arquitectónicos. A través de esta selección podrá verse cómo el ambiente, la estrategia y la metodología de trabajo pasan a ser tan importantes como los propios proyectos. En su ponencia responderán a preguntas como: ¿Cómo un estudio joven entiende y define su práctica de la arquitectura después de concluir universidad? “o, ¿Qué tipo de circunstancias y retos influyen en su trabajo diario?

Ivo Barão, nacido en 1986 en el sur de Portugal, estudió arquitectura en la FAUP en Porto y trabajó en Gigon / Guyer en Zúrich. Peter Hutter, nacido en 1984 en Suiza, estudió arquitectura en la ETH de Zúrich. Antes de fundar su propia oficina junto con Ivo Barão, trabajó en la oficina de Peter Zumthor.

Barão-Hutter Atelier es un despacho de arquitectura y objetos con sede en Zúrich. Desde 2010 Ivo Barão y Peter Hutter están trabajando juntos en un espacio que fue anteriormente una carnicería y que hoy se ha convertido en un estudio colectivo y multidisciplinar. Actualmente comparten este espacio con fotógrafos.

La oficina colabora con diversos artesanos y especialistas, tales como cocineros, directores de escena y jardineros. Debido a esta forma particular de trabajo Barão-Hutter ha adquirido un enfoque muy sensible a las diferentes tareas. Sus proyectos guardan siempre estrecha relación con los contextos urbanos o los paisajes circundantes. Toman en cuenta los colores típicos, sonidos, luz del día, topografías, zonas de construcción, la vegetación, los materiales, sombras y elementos arquitectónicos antiguos.

El exsocio de Caruso St.John el arquitecto inglés Adam Khan, ganador de dos medallas RIBA, en 2010 y 2012 dará una conferencia sobre proyectos en marcha que exploran la potencia emocional del material y la construccióN.

El próximo Miércoles 20 de Marzo, en el marco del ciclo de conferencias “Foros Esarq 2013: Atmospheres. The sense of things” que organiza la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de la Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, ESARQ-UIC, el arquitecto Adam Khan, impartirá una ponencia con el título “The Feeling of Structure”. El acto, que será abierto al público, tendrá lugar a las 19:00 horas en el Aula Magna del Campus Barcelona de la UIC.

En la conferencia “The Feeling of Structure”, Adam Khan expondrá una serie de proyectos recientes en Reino Unido que exploran la potencia emocional del material y de la construcción. Artesanía rigurosa, un intenso proceso de ingeniería y el diseño en la integración de los materiales son la base de su forma de trabajar, que invita al apego emocional a través de la presencia física y la flexibilidad de uso. Adam Khan combina su profesión de arquitecto con su pasión por la música, aportando sentimiento a las estructuras arquitectónicas. En cada proyecto, existe un compromiso constante con la belleza y la sociabilidad, la colaboración y el compromiso de todas las disciplinas y fronteras sociales. Además de Arquitecto y profesor, Adam Khan ha sido durante doce años carpintero y constructor, dos profesiones que han sido parte de su formación como arquitecto.

És una evidència que quasi cap arquitecte compra ja revistes d’arquitectura. En canvi, qualsevol estudi,
independentment del seu volum d’obra construïda, sí que manté el seu propi lloc a Internet per tal de difondre tant els seus projectes com també les seves idees, així com les activitats en les que participa. A
més, cada cop els arquitectes utilitzen les xarxes socials per tal d’estar presents i mantenir un contacte (i un debat?) amb els seus seguidors. El convidat d’aquesta jornada ens presentarà quins canals son més adients i les particularitats que tenen per a l’arquitecte d’avui.

Éstas Jornadas forman parte del proyecto Hábitat 2. Hábitat 2 es un proyecto que la Agencia para el Desarrollo y la Cooperación Suiza está desarrollando en Cuba. Tiene como propósito hacer una diagnosis del hábitat a escala local para desarrollar estrategias locales del hábitat a la vez que capacitar a los municipios para su gestión. Se parte de una visión integral del hábitat y des de la transversalización del género y de la participación ciudadana. Éstas Jornadas tienen el objetivo de  formar y aportar conocimiento e ideas para una posterior aplicación y adaptación a la realidad y necesidades cubana.

[urbanIN+] colabora con este proyecto como consultoría des de hace 2 años para desarrollar indicadores de hábitat que incluyan parámetros de género e inclusión. Ahora la COSUDE ha encargado a [urbanIN+] que organice estas Jornadas para un grupo de personas técnicas que viajarán a Barcelona este mes de marzo.

Las Jornadas llevan por título La construcción de la ciudad inclusiva: estrategias de intervención integral en el hábitat local y tendrán lugar en Barcelona del 10 al 16 de marzo de 2013. Se tratarán temas de espacio público, planificación urbana, vivienda, sostenibilidad, participación e inclusión social, desde una mirada de género presente y transversal.

Lecture: From the city as a field to the city as an object

Bio: Peter Trummer is Professor for Urban Design and Head of the Institute for Urban Design & Spatial Planning at the University of Innsbruck. He was Head of the Associative Design Program at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam from 2004 to 2010. He received his Master Degree at the Technical University in Graz by Günther Domenig and received his Postgraduate Degree at the Berlage Institute in Amsterdam in 1997. He is a former Architect at UN Studio before establishing his own practice in 2001 to 2005. He writes his PHD on “population thinking in architecture”. He was Guest Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Sci-Arc Southern California Institute of Architecture, at the Technical University in Munich and hold the 1. Roland Rainer Chair at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He lectures, teaches and is invited as a critic at the the AA in London, the University for Applied Art in Vienna, the IAAC in Barcelona, the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, the SCI-Arc in Los Angeles, the University of Pennsylvania and at Rice University in Houston.
Recently he has published a series of  Essays: “Associative Design – from Type to Population” in AD Reader: Computational Design Thinking, “Morphogenetic Urbanism” in AD Digital Cities, “Population Thinking in the age of Bio-politics” in Volume 18, , “Vom Typus zur Population“ in Arch+189,  “The Architecture of the Many” in Morpho-Ecologies and gave recently an interview in Manifold. He currently has finished a Studio Publication at the Academy of Fine Arts under the Title: “Urbanism in the Age of Bio-Politics”.

La Fundación ArtAids y Lawrence Weiner han concebido una instalación nueva que se exhibirá en el mercado de Santa Caterina de Barcelona y otras plazas. El objetivo es sensibilizar a la población acerca del sida y el estigma asociado a la enfermedad.

La Fundación ArtAids presenta ahora Para siempre y un día, una escultura-banco que traspasa las paredes del museo y se muestra en uno de los mercados más representativos de Barcelona, el de Santa Caterina. Luego viajará a otras ciudades, como Vigo. La instalación está acompañada de un proyecto educativo que se llevará a cabo entre los comerciantes y los clientes, así como alumnos de secundaria; estos últimos iniciarán el taller en las aulas.

El autor de la obra es Lawrence Weiner (Nueva York, 1942), uno de los artistas más significativos de nuestro tiempo. Se trata de un creador que tiene el don de dar forma a esculturas hechas con palabras que invitan a reflexionar acerca de cosas impensables en apariencia. La escultura es asiento, punto de encuentro y acogida que ArtAids quiere dispensar a diario a los transeúntes en este mercado internacional tras la reforma de los arquitectos Enric Miralles y Benedetta Tagliabue.
