Architecture at Zero is a design competition for decarbonization, equity and resilience, open to students and professionals worldwide. It serves to engage the fields of architecture, design, engineering and planning in the pursuit of sustainable design.
The Architecture at Zero competition, now in its thirteenth year, was conceived as a response to the zero net energy targets set out by the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) in the 2008 report, California’s Long Term Energy Efficiency Strategic Plan. In this report, the CPUC set out four “Big Bold Energy Efficiency Strategies” for California that include the goals that all new residential construction in California be ZNE by 2020 and that all new commercial construction be ZNE by 2030.
The 2024 competition challenge is to design a new building on a middle school campus in East Los Angeles (East LA), California. The new building will replace relocatable classrooms and includes science labs, art classroom, maker space, outdoor learning environments, and a teacher workroom. While the competition program location is Griffith STEAM Magnet Middle School, note that this is an ideas competition and is not a “real” project.
Deadline for entries is December 16, 2024.
Up to $25,000 in prize money awarded to professional and student entries.
Architecture at Zero is presented by Southern California Edison (SCE); Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E); Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) and The American Institute of Architects California (AIA CA), The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and The American Institute of Architects, Los Angeles, California Architectural Foundation, California Energy Commission, CIE Foundation and ASHRAE- San Jose.
