Through and intense journey, we will discover the work of two of the most unique architects from Catalonia: Antonio Gaudi and Enric Miralles.

We set the stage with a general view of the socioeconomic situation which gives rise to the Modernista movement in the Colonia Güell in Santa Coloma de Cervelló. A new town factory town meant to address the condition of factory workers during the industrial revolution through the creation of public amenities. While there, our attention will focus on the Crypt of the Church designed by Gaudi that sadly, was left unfinished. This is the religious structure famous for its structural synthesis and inspiration from nature that served as a laboratory to investigate the techniques the architect would later use in the Sagrada Familia.

We will then continue to the town of Igualada to see the town cemetery designed by Enric Miralles and Carme Pinós. An impressive poetic project inserted into the topography on the outskirts of the city. Miralles digs into the landscape literally and figuratively using archetypal shapes to create a new language the Gaudi did in the Park Güell. Miralles’ beautiful hand drawings of the cemetery become the walls and the landscape in a very evocative way.
